EHS Drops Girls Game To M-S; Neoga, T-town, Newton Win

Effingham played host to Mahomet-Seymour in an Apollo Conference girls high school basketball contest Saturday and fell, 50-43.

Mahomet-Seymour edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead on the Hearts. The Bulldogs then had a 14-9 second period to lead 24-17 at halftime.

Bria Beals kept the Hearts in the contest with eight points in the second period, knocking in two three-pointers.

The Hearts came back with an 11-10 third quarter to trail 34-28 going into the final period. 

Bria Beals nailed three trifectas for nine points in the final period and the Hearts were tied at 41-41 with 1:50 remaining in the contest.

But Mahomet-Seymour outscored EHS 9-2 to end the game and pull out the 50-43 win.

Beals led the way for the Hearts with 17 points on five three-pointers and a regular basket. Also in double figures was Ella Niebrugge with 11.

Effingham dropped to 4-5 in the Apollo Conference and 17-9 overall. The Hearts will be back in action Tuesday at Charleston in an Apollo Conference matchup.

At Robinson

Neoga High School, ranked eighth in the latest Class 1A State Girls Basketball Poll, handed Robinson a 58-52 loss Saturday.

The two teams were knotted at 14-14 after the opening quarter before Neoga edged ahead 28-27 at halftime.

The Indians then had a 30-25 second half for the six-point winning margin.

Two players hit double digits for Neoga. Sydney Richards led the way with 12 field goals and two of three at the line for 26 points while Sydney Hakman connected for 12 points.

Neoga is now 25-3 on the season and will play host to Dieterich Thursday.

Robinson won the junior varsity contest, 13-12.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis continued to pick up wins in a busy few days. The Wooden Shoes had beaten Effingham Friday evening then turned around to edge Breese Central, 46-44 Saturday.

Central moved ahead 16-11 in the opening quarter and led 31-24 at halftime, all behind the scoring of Taylor Trame who connected for 13 points through the first two quarters.

Emily Konkel kept the Shoes within striking distance with nine of the team's 13 points in the second quarter.

The Wooden Shoes defense went to work in the second half, holding Trame to seven points and the rest of the Central squad to six while taking a 22-13 second half run to pull out the victory.

Kaylee Niebrugge led the way for T-town with 21 points on nine field goals and three of four at the line. Also in double figures was Konkel with 15.

Niebrugge also led in rebounds with five. Konkel had three steals.

T-town improved to 23-3 on the season and was to return to action tonight hosting Breese Mater Dei but the game has been canceled. The Shoes will finish out the week at Bloomington Central Catholic Friday.

At Newton

Newton edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Saturday, 56-53 in overtime.

The Eagles swept out to a 13-5 opening quarter lead but CHBC came back to pull within 24-21 at halftime.

Newton then had a 17-13 third quarter run to lead 41-34. CHBC made another comeback bid to knot the score at 46-46 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Newton had a 10-7 run to pull out the victory.

Lilly Kessler led Newton with 19 points on six field goals and seven of nine at the free throw line. Also in double figures was Addy O'Dell with 13.

The Bobcats were led by Macee Rodman with 18, Mady Wojcik with 17 and Gracie Heckert with 13. Heckert led in rebounds with nine. Heckert had six assists., Marissa Summers led in steals with four.

CHBC dropped to 15-9 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Newton was a 38-20 winner. CHBC fell to 6-8.

Newton was led by Macy Barthelemy with 11 points. CHBC was led by Shae Nohren with 10.
