Newton Wins LIC Tourney Title, C'land Third At LPC Meet; Area Boys Basketball Roundup

OLNEY -- Newton High School won the championship of the Little Illini Conference Boys Basketball Tournament Friday with a 40-37 victory over Olney.

The Eagles trailed Olney, 9-7 after the opening quarter and by three, 20-17, at halftime.

Newton then came out with a 13-9 third quarter run to move ahead 30-29 going into the final quarter. Newton continued its run with a 10-8 final period.

Only one player for both teams hit double figures in the low-scoring contest. Caden Nichols led the Eagles with 14 points on six field goals, one a a free throw. Parker Wolf tallied nine.

Newton was right back in action Saturday at the Pinckneyville Shootout taking on Marion. Marion came out the 68-47 winner.

Marion held a 37-23 halftime lead. Newton had a 16-11 third quarter run but Marion remained in control to lead 48-39 going into the final quarter then had a 20-8 surge.

Nichols led the Eagles with 18 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and five of seven at the line. Also in double figures was Dylan Gier with 10.

The Eagles are now 16-8 on the season and return to action Tuesday at Teutopolis.

Lawenceville finished third with a 48-46 win over Casey-Westfield. The consolation championship went to Robinson over Mount Carmel.

At Argenta

Cumberland claimed third place at the LIncoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday.

The Pirates handed Cerro Gordo/Bement a 70-61 loss.

Cumberland fell behind 16-7 in the opening quarter as Konnor Waterhouse scored eight points for CGB.

But the Pirates started a comeback with an 11-6 second period to pull within 22-18 at halftime. Gavin Hendrix tallied six points while Maddox McElravy added five.

CBG had an 11-10 third quarter to lead 33-28 going into the final period.

Then here came Cumberland. Hendrix went to work with three baskets and two free throws for eight points while McElravy added seven and Bryant Weber 5. Cumberland went on a 20-15 run for a 48-48 tie, sending the contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, Cumberland was in charge with a 22-8 run as McElravy hit two baskets, one from three-point range, and was five of five at the line for 10 points while Hendrix scored eight. Trevin McGee and Jaxon Boldt added four points each.

Henrdix finished with 25 points on 11 field goals and three of five at the line while McElravy hit eight field goals and five of five at the line for 24.

Decatur LSA won the championship by beating Okaw Valley, 66-56.

At Breese

Teutopolis headed to Breese Mater Dei for a Friday evening contest and fell to the host squad, 50-46.

Mater Dei moved ahead 19-11 in the opening quarter and led 30-20 at halftime.

T-town came back with a 26-20 second half run but couldn't make up that opening half lead by Mater Dei.

James Niebrugge was the lone Wooden Shoe player in double digits with 18 on eight field goals and two of four at the line. Joey Niebrugge added nine.

In the Pinckneyville Shootout Saturday, the Shoes fell to Pinckneyville, 50-41.

T-town took a 10-9 opening quarter lead as Caleb Siemer tallied six points.

But Pinckneyville came back to take a slight 24-23 halftime lead and went on for an 8-4 third quarter run to lead 32-27 going into the final quarter.

In that final period, the Panthers had an 18-14 lead for the winning margin.

Siemer was the lone T-town player in double figures with 11 while Brendan Niebrugge added nine.

In other games at the Pinckneyville Shootout, Steeleville beat Christopher 51-46, Murphysboro won over Greenville 51-27, Waltonville edged Chester 40-38, Robinson handled Meridian 76-58, Mascoutah beat Eureka 48-45 and Centralia won over Triad 51-39.
