EHS Falls To T.F. North At Salem Boys Tourney

SALEM -- Effingham High School fell to Thornton Fractional North, 61-50 at the 71st Salem Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

 North stepped out to a 16-6 opening quarter lead on the Hearts as Jayden Smalls knocked in eight points.

The Hearts came back with a 17-14 second period to trail 30-23 at halftime. Garrett Wolfe went on a run, hitting a three-pointer and two baskets for seven points.

The two squads played to an 11-11 third quarter before T.F. North finished out with a 20-16 final period.

North nailed 10 of 17 free throws in the quarter along with five baskets.

Andrew Donaldson hit a three-pointer in the second quarter before scoring eight in the final period with two more three-pointers and a regular basket. He finished with 11 points.

Leaidng the way was Wolfe with 19 points on six baskets that included a three-pointer and four of five at the line.

The Meters improved to 14-2 on the season while Effingham dropped to 8-14.

In the opening game Thursday, East St. Louis defeated Salem, 80-57.

Effingham will be back in action Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Salem. If the Hearts win, they will play for the consolation championship at 5 p.m. If they lose, they will play for sevetth place at 3:30.

Tonight's games feature Mount Vernon against Carbondale at 6:30 followed by East St. Louis against Thornton Fractional North at 8. The winners will advance to the championship game at 8 p.m. Saturday while the losers will play for third place at 6:30.
