Shoes To Play For Fifth Place at Highland; Vandalia, LIC, LPC Tourney Scores

HIGHLAND -- The two games leading into the fifth place contest at the Highland Girls Basketball Tournament were hotly contested Thursday evening.

Teutopolis captured a 48-46 win over host Highland while Bethalto Civic Memorial edged Breese Central, 49-48. The Wooden Shoes will now meet Bethalto at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for fifth place.

The Wooden Shoes stepped out to a 14-3 opening quarter lead behind Kaylee Niebrugge's six points on a basket and four of six at the line.

The two teams played to a 14-14 second quarter and the Shoes held a 28-21 halftime lead.

T-town continued to outscore Highland in the third quarter with a 12-9 run as Emily Konkel scored seven points.

But Highland put on a final period run, outscoring the Shoes 16-8 only to fall short.

Konkel led the way for T-town with 19 points on seven field goals that included one three-pointer and was a perfect four of four at the line. Niebrugge finished with 12 points while Mollie Ruholl added 11.

Konkel had a double-double with her 19 points and 11 rebounds. She also led in steals with three and had one assist.

The Shoes hit 12 of 15 free throws while Highland connected on only one of three.

In the other contest Thursday evening in winner bracket action, Okawville won over O'Fallon, 55-50.

Saturday's finals, along with T-town in the fifth place contest, include Alton against Okawville for the champoinship at 2:30 p.m. and Breese Mater Dei facing O'Fallon at 1 p.m. for third place.

Vandalia Mid-Winter Tournament

Salem and Wesclin came out winners at the Vandalia Mid-Winter Tournament Thursday.

Salem trounced Madison, 67-6 while Wesclin claimed a 34-21 win over Centralia.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday.

Effingham will be playing for the championship at 2:30 p.m. against Mascoutah.

Greenville will take on Vandalia at 1 p.m. for third place.

Centralia will meet Madison at 10 a.m. for seventh place followed by Salem against Wesclin for fifth place at 11:30.

 

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament

The finals are set for the Lincoln Priarie Conference Tournament at Cumberland High School.

In Thursday evening's games, Tri-County defeated Cumberland, 46-14 while Cerro Gordo/Bement won over Okaw Valley, 51-14.

Tri-County took a 13-5 opening quarter lead and led 30-8 at halftime.

Cumberland was led by Suzy Fritts with six points and Paige Dittamore with five.

Saturday's finals include Tri-County against Cerro Gordo/Bement at 5:30 p.m. for the championship while Cumberland will face Okaw Valley at 4 p.m. for third place.

The consolation championship will feature Arcola meeting Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond at 2:30. The seventh place contest will feature Argenta-Oreana against Decatur LSA at 1.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

Paris claimed the championship of the Little Illini Conference Tournament Thursday evening.

The Tigers downed Robinson, 45-25.

The third place game went to Mount Carmel over Richland County, 38-26.
