VANDALIA -- Effingham High School handed host Vandalia a 55-46 loss in the Second Annual Vandalia Mid-Winter Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Hearts seemed to put the game away early with a 22-10 opening quarter run as Madison Mapes sent three-pointers raining through the air. Mapes connected on four three-pointers for 12 points while Ella Niebrugge and Bria Beals knocked in a three-pointer each.

The Hearts continued on with a slight 8-7 second period edge to lead 30-17 at halftime. Averie Wolfe contributed a three-pointer and Marissa Allie an old-fashioned three-pointer with a basket and a free throw.

Vandalia came back with a 13-5 third quarter run to pull within 35-30 going into the final period.

But the Hearts found the range once more, outscoring the Vandals 20-16 in the final period for the winning margin.

Mapes again went on a tear, this time, connecting on two three-pointers and six of six at the line. Wolfe nailed another three-pointer.

Mapes finished with 27 points that came from seven three-pointers and six of six at the line. EHS nailed 11 three-pointers in the game.

Both teams did well from the free throw line. The Hearts hit 12 of 14 while Vandalia was 13 of 16.

In the second game Wednesday, Mascoutah was a 49-42 winner over Greenville.

Effingham (16-6) will face Mascoutah at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the championship. Greenville meets Vandalia Saturday at 1 p.m. for third place.
