Marshall Beats BSE For Dieterich Girls Title, Neoga Third at Monticello, N.C. Advances

DIETERICH -- Marshall captured the championship of the Dieterich Girls Holiday Basketball Tournament with a 57-48 win over Brownstown/St. Elmo Wednesday.

The score was tied at 15-15 after the opening quarter and the Lions moved ahead 31-26 at halftime. The two teams played to a 10-10 third quarter and Marshall finished strong with a 16-12 final period.

Zara Engledon led Marshall with 17 points while Adi Scott added 16.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Lexi Seabaugh with 18.

Third place contest went to Newton over Dieterich 59-52.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 16-8 opening quarter lead but Newton came back with a 17-10 second period to pull within 26-25 at halftime. Dieterich led 42-37 going into the final quarter but the Eagles came back with a 22-10 run to pull out the victory.

Newton had two players in double figures. Camryn Martin led the way with 18 points on four field goals and 10 of 10 at the line. Karasyn Martin added 17 points on six field goals, three from trifecta land, and two of four the line. Lilly Kessler finished with 11 points.

Dieterich was led by Kady Tegeler with 20 and Cortney Brummer with 11.

Newton hit 16 of 21 free throws in the contest.

The fifth place game went to Arcola over Casey-Westfield, 47-21.

In the seventh place contest, South Central downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 62-41.

South Central edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead then opened the game up with a 24-7 second quarter run.

The Cougars were led by Brooklyn Garrett with 24 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and 11 of 17 at the line. Taegan Webster chipped in with 18 points on four field goals and 10 of 14 at the line. The Cougars connected on 23 of 34 free throws while Red Hill had five of 17.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Adi Scott (Marshall), Kacie Sik (Arcola), Miley Britton (Dieterich), Cortney Brummer (Dieterich), Zara Engledow (Marshall), Lexi Seabaugh (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Brooklyn Garrett (South Central), Laney Baldrige (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Kelsey Moore (Arcola) and Kady Tegeler (Dieterich). 

The Cheerleading award went to Red HIll.

At Monticello

Neoga finished third at the Monticello Holiday Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday.

The Indians tallied a 59-32 win over Ridgeview. Neoga ran off to a 16-5 opening quarter lead and led 34-9 at halftime.

Four players finished in double figures. Sydney Richards led the way with 15 points on five field goals and three free throws. Haylee Campbell chipped in with 14 while Allison Worman added 12 and Brynn Richards 10.

Neoga improved to 17-1 on the season.

Tuscola won the championship with a 55-44 victory over Clinton.

Fifth place went to Stark County over Gibson City/Melvin-Sibley 43-38 and Monticello was a winner in the seventh place game over Paxton-Buckley-Loda, 33-28.

At Centralia

North Clay (Louisville) keeps advancing at the Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Girls Winterfest Basketball Tournament.

The Cardinals downed the host CORL squad 51-37 to move into the final four.

In other games Wednesday, Hamilton County beat Greenville 46-22, Staunton won over Johnston City 57-29 and Father McGiveny beat Pinckneyville 58-27 in the winner bracket.

The consolation bracket play, Chester beat Sandoval 30-26, Anna-Jonsboro downed Dupo 42-24, Vandalia beat Elkville/Ziegler-Royalton 59-19 and Trenton Wesclin won against East Alton-Wood River 47-20.

North Clay (9-4) will face Father McGivney today at 6:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the championship game Friday at 8 p.m. The losers will drop into third place and meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
