Effingham, Brownstown/St. Elmo Nab Girls Victories

Effingham High School moved to 6-1 on the season with a 49-36 win over North Clay (Louisville) in girls basketball competition Saturday.

The Hearts edged out to a 12-7 opening quarter lead as Madison Mapes and Ella Niebrugge scored five points each, both hitting a three-pointer.

The Cardinals pulled within 25-23 at halftime on a 16-13 second quarter run. Miah Ballard and Alexis VanDyke broke loose with eight points each in the quarter.

But the Hearts came out after the halftime and went on a 17-3 run to pull into a 42-26 lead and that was the contest.

In that run, Niebrugge knocked in two three-pointers and finished with nine in the quarter.

Niebrugge finished with 17 points to lead the Hearts while Averie Wolfe added 12. Mapes and Bria Beals were one point away from double figures with nine each. The Hearts had eight three-pointers in the contest led by Niebrugge with four and Wolfe with two.

North Clay was led by Ballard with 14 and VanDyke with eight. The Cardinals dropped to 4-2.

At Bluford

Brownstown/St. Elmo picked up a 56-39 win over Webber Township (Bluford) Friday.

BSE took a12-7 opening quarter lead and led 24-14 at halftime. The Bombers held a 35-25 lead going into the final quarter and had a 21-14 run.

Four players hit double digits for BSE. Lexi Seabaugh and Jayna Ireland scored 13 each while Avery Myers added 12 and Laney Baldrige added 11. Myers scored 10 in the final quarter on two three-pointers and two regular baskets.

BSE also was a 31-11 winner in the junior varsity game. Williams scored eight points.
