Effingham, Dieterich Claim Girls BB Wins

Although Effingham trailed at halftime against Taylorville, the Hearts got on a roll in the second half to take a 54-45 girls basketball win Tuesday evening.

The Tornadoes held an 8-6 opening quarter lead and led 26-21 at halftime. Bria Beals kept the Hearts close with eight points in the second quarter on three baskets that included two three-pointers. Madison Mapes knocked in a three-pointer in the quarter.

Then EHS began to connect. The Hearts' Ella Niebrugge, after scoring four points in the opening half, came back with seven in the third quarter surge while Beals chipped in with five and Averie Wolfe hit a three-pointer. The Hearts led 38-35 going into the final period.

In that quarter, EHS had a 16-10 run to pull out the victory. EHS had three field goals and were eight of 11 from the line. NIebrugge hit a basket and was four of four at the line while Beals put in another three-pointer and Mapes was three of four from the line.

Niebrugge finished with 17 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer, and six of eight at the line while Beals added 16 on six field goals, four of those three-pointers.

At Oblong

Dieterich easily claimed a win over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Tuesday evening, 50-19.

The Movin' Maroons took a 17-2 opening quarter lead as Miley Britton and Cortney Brummer scored five each and Kady Tegeler four. Brummer and Britton connected on a three-pointer each.

Britton then cut loose with six field goals that included two three-pointers for 14 points in the second period as the Maroons moved ahead 39-8 at halftime.

Britton finished with 19 points on seven field goals, three of those trifectas, and was two of three at the line. She was the lone Dieterich player in double figures.

At Cowden

Pana tallied a 65-53 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The two teams played to a 12-12 opening quarter tie before Pana edged ahead 26-25 at halftime. The Panthers then had a 39-28 second half run.

Four players hit double figures for Pana. Ashcraft led the way with 22 while Alde had 17, A. Beyers 11 and Hadowski 10.

CHBC was led by three players in double digits. Madi Wojcik tallied 18 while Gracie Heckert chipped in with 16 and Ruby Stuckemeyer added 11. Wojcik led in rebounds with eight while Heckert added seven. Heckert led in assists with six.

The Bobcats dropped to 5-2 on the season.

In junior varsity play, Pana was a 60-19 winner. CHBC was led by Karlee Smith with 11 as the team fell to 1-2.

At Cowden
