Effingham St. Anthony fell in a high school boys basketball contest Saturday against St. Joseph-Ogden, 55-43.

 

St. Joseph-Ogden edged out to a 10-8 opening quarter lead but the Bulldogs came back with a 16-13 second period to lead 24-23 at halftime. Craig Croy scored six points during the second period run.

But St. Joseph-Ogden came back with a 15-11 third period and outscored the Bulldogs 17-8 in the final quarter.

St. Anthony had two players in double figures. Brock Fearday led the way with 11 points while Kyle Stewart added 10.

St. Anthony claimed the junior varsity contest, 62-58. Collin Westendorf scored 14 and Ryan Schmidt 11.

At Flora

North Clay (Louisville) picked up a 51-40 non-conference victory over Flora Saturday.

The Cardinals trailed Flora 12-6 after the opening quarter and 19-16 at halftime. But North Clay came back with a 35-21 second half surge to pull out the victory.

Logan Fleener scored nine points in the opening half then came back with 12 in the second half to finish with 21 to lead the Cardinals. Also in double figures was Alex Boose with 11. After only getting one free throw in the first half, Boose scored a three-pointer in the third quarter then put in seven in the final quarter.

In the junior varsity game, Flora edged North Clay 32-27. North Clay was led by Troy Wells with eight.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown fell to Affton in Saturday nonconference action, 65-58.

Affton edged out to a 11-10 opening quarter lead. But Affton then went on a 24-7 second period run. Although SEB came back with a 22-12 third period to pull within 47-39 and had a 19-18 final period, the Eagles couldn't get over that first half deficit.

Three players hit double digits for SEB. Jarrett Pasley and Brady Maxey led the way with 13 points each while Gravyn Smith added 12.

Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament

Cumberland fell to Decatur LSA in opening round play of the Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament Saturday, 59-49.

The Pirates trailed LSA 15-14 after the opening quarter and 33-26 at halftime. Cumberland had a 14-11 third quarter to pull within 44-40 going into the final period.  But LSA came back with a 15-9 final period run.

Cumberland was led by Elijah McElravy with 19 points and Wiley Peters and Jaxon Boldt with 11 each.

In other games Saturday, Okaw Valley defeated Argenta-Oreana 66-27, Cerro Gordo-Bement beat Tri-County 49-32 and Arcola won over Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 59-54.

Cumberland will be back in action Friday against either Villa Grove or Tri-County at 6 p.m. in consolation bracket play.

Teutopolis pounded Shelbyville to the tune of 71-42 in regular season action Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes ran off to a 36-20 halftime lead then had a 34-22 second half run.

Brendan Niebrugge led the way with 22 points on eight field goals that included six three-pointers. Also in double figures was Caleb Siemer with 13.

James NIebrugge had eight rebounds while Siemer had seven. Max Niebrugge had seven assists.

Little Illini Conference Tournament

In the Little Illini Conference Tournament Saturday, Newton captured a victory.

The Eagles defeated Paris 56-49.

In other contests, Olney won over Red Hill (Bridgeport) 59-27, Robinson downed Casey-Westfield 46-41 and No. 7 Marshall upset No. 2 Mount Carmel 58-45.

Tonight's lone game features Mount Carmel against Lawrenceville at 6 p.m. in consolation bracket play.

Tuesday's games find Olney facing Robinson at 6 p.m. and Newton meeting Marshall at 7:30 in winner bracket play.
