Effingham Wins Twice At Vandalia Girls Invite

VANDALIA -- Effingham High School captured two victories at the Vandalia Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament Monday.The Hearts opened with a 52-32 win over Centralia.

EHS edged out to an 11-9 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 29-18 at halftime. The Hearts continued with the momentum in the third period with an 11-2 run.

Two players hit double figures for the Hearts. Sawyer Althoff led the way with 15 points while Meredith Schaefer added 14.

EHS then pounded Vandalia, 61-38. EHS held a 25-16 halftime lead then had a 25-12 third period run.

Only one player scored in double figures but four players had nine points each. Sawyer Althoff led the way with 10 while Madison Mapes, Ella Niebrugge and Schaefer added nine each. Nine players scored in the contest.

In other games, Mascoutah won over Greenville 52-31 and Centralia downed Mascoutah 44-26.

The tourney continues Wednesday with Effingham against Greenville at 6 and Vandalia taking on Centralia at 7. The Hearts won't play Thursday but will finish out the round robin tourney against Mascoutah at 6 p.m. Friday.
