NEOGA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School ran off to a big opening quarter lead and held on for a 60-49 National Trail Conference girls basketball win over Neoga Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs had a 22-9 opening quarter and led 34-16 at halftime. Riley Guy scored 12 points in that opening quarter run. Although Neoga came back to outscore the Bulldogs in the second half, it was too little, too late.

Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Guy led the way with 17 points on six field goals, four of those from three-point range, and one of two at the line, while Grace Karolewicz hit four field goals and seven of eight at the line for 16 points. Lucy Fearday added 15 on six field goals and three of three at the line.

Neoga's top scorer was Sydney Richards with 31 points on 12 field goals and seven of eight at the line. She had an eight point opening quarter and scored 10 in the third period and nine in the final quarter. The Indians fall to 4-1 in the conference, 16-4 overall.

Neoga edged St. Anthony 22-20 in a junior varsity game that went only two quarters. Neoga was led by Worman with nine while St. Anthony was led by Vonderheide with 14.

At Paris

Paris edged out to an 18-13 opening quarter and went on to down Effingham, 55-44 in Apollo Conference action Thursday.

Kate Littleton got the Tigers off in the right direction, hitting three baskets and four of five at the line for 12 points in that opening period.

Paris held a 30-23 halftime lead and led 41-32 going into the final quarter.

"We had it down to three points a couple of times in the fourth quarter and couldn't get over the hump," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer.

Paris was led by Littletown with 19 points.

Effingham was led by Ella Niebrugge with 11 points and Sawyer Althoff and Meredith Schaefer with eight each.

 At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg trailed South Central by a 12-10 count after the opening quarter but got on track with a 13-6 second period and went on for a 50-38 National Trail Conference win over South Central Thursday evening.

The Cougars came back with a run in the third period to pull within three but WSS had a 14-5 final quarter.

Ella Kinkelaar led the way with 18 points on six field goals, two of those from three-point range, and four of four at the line. Also in double figures were Samantha Hayes with 12 and Morgan Mathis with 10. The Hatchets hit 10 of 19 free throws.

South Central was led by Ryleigh Swartzlander with 12 and Halle Smith with 11.

Cumberland trailed Okaw Valley by a point after the opening quarter but moved ahead with an 18-6 second period run. However, Okaw Valley came back with a 30-23 second half but the Pirates hung on for a 55-51 victory.

Three players hit double figures for the winners. Abbie Becker led the way with 15 points on four three-pointers and three of four at the line while Katelyn Shoemaker added 13 and Zoe Mitchell 10.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City took a 17-9 opening quarter lead and went on for a 66-29 non-conference win over Arthur Christian Thursday.

The Bobcats were led by Gracie Heckert with 27 points on 10 field goals, three of those trifectas, and three of three at the line. Lani Morrison tallied 12 and Madison Wojcik 11. Wojcik led the way in rebounds with 10 while Heckert added nine. Heckert led in steals with seven and assists with seven.

CHBC also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 40-5. Birgen Schlanser led CHBC with 12 points.

At Brownstown

Altamont was a winner over Brownstown/St. Elmo in National Trail Conference action Thursday.

Grace Nelson connected on five field goals, three of those trifectas for 13 points in the opening quarter, half of what the Indians scored with a 26-5 run. Peyton Osteen added eight.

The Indians held a 36-14 halftime lead and led 52-28 going into the final quarter.

Nelson finished with 35 points on 14 field goals, five of those three-pointers, and two of three at the line. Osteen added nine points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Lexi Seabaugh with 13 points.

At Paris

The Little Illini Conference Tournament got underway Thursday evening with one game.

Red Hill (Bridgeport), seeded ninth, downed eighth-seeded Casey-Westfield, 42-15. Red Hill advances to face top-seeded Paris at 3 p.m. Saturday while Casey-Wesfield drops into the consolation bracket against either Marshall or Lawrenceville at 6 p.m. Monday.

Newton will open play, weather permitting, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. against Olney.
