Bulldogs Win In Shortened Contest, Girls Area Basketball Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony HIgh School downed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 62-23 in a game that ended early in the final period due to an injury.

The Bulldogs took control early, moving into an 18-9 opening quarter lead behind Riley Guy's six points. Guy stepped to the free throw line for her first points, connecting on both free throws and reaching her 1,000th career point. She also hit two field goals. Lucy Fearday tallied six points on three field goals.

The lead went to 42-11 at halftime. Fearday tacked on eight more points to hit 14 by halftime. Guy also went into double figures before the half with five more points.

In the third period, the Bulldogs had an 18-12 score and led 60-23. In the final period, the Bulldogs had connected on one field goal to move ahead 62-23 when St. Anthony's Izzy Hakman went up and came down hard, suffering an injury. The game was put on hold while Hakman was taken from the court and eventually the contest was called at 62-23.

An update: Hakman has been released from the hospital and is being treated for back spasms.

Fearday finished with 20 points for the Bulldogs on 10 field goals while Guy tallied 16 on six field goals that included two three-pointers and two of two at the line.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had one player hit double figures. Ella Kinkelaar knocked in five field goals and was three of five at the line for 13 points.

St. Anthony was a 33-11 winner in the junior varsity matchup. The Bulldogs were led by Stacie Vonderheide with 13 and Cameran Rios with 10. Amparo  Martinez led WSS with six.

At Altamont

Altamont handed Casey-Westfield a 60-21 loss in action Thursday evening.

The Indians ran off to a 21-4 opening quarter lead as Grace Nelson tallied 12 points while Peyton Osteen knocked in two three-pointers. The lead went to 34-12 at halftime. Osteen contniued her three-point scoring with another one and added on a two-pointer for five in the period.

Altamont had a 17-7 third period as Nelson connected on four baskets with one of those from three-point range for nine points and Skylie Klien scored a three-pointer for her second of the contest.

Altamont finished with Nelson scoring 27 on 11 field goals and four of five at the line. Osteen tacked on 11 and Klien finished with eight.

At Louisville

Neoga ran off to an early lead and downed North Clay (Louisville), 51-28 in Thursday evening action.

The Indians had two players in double figures. Sydney Richards led the way with 21 points on nine field goals and three of four at the line, while Avery  Fearday connected on seven field goals and two of three at the line for 17.

Neoga jumped out to a 15-3 opening quarter lead and led 28-16 at halftime. The Indians had a 23-12 second half.

Haylee Campbell pulled down 10 rebounds while S. Richards had seven rebounds and five blocks.

Neoga improves to 2-0 in the National Trail Conference and 5-1 overall and will play host to Cumberland Saturday.

Neoga also nabbed the junior varsity game, 29-20.

Dieterich held off Brownstown/St. Elmo for a 48-36 victory Thursday evening.

The Movin' Maroons edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead as Eva Meinhart tallied four points. Dieterich held a 25-19 halftime lead.

Dieterich then had a 15-8 third period to lead 40-27 and that was the contest. Only one player hit double figures for the Maroons, Ruby Westendorf with 10. Kaitlyn Boerngen added nine.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Jayna Ireland with nine.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City pounded out a 29-0 opening quarter and finished off beating Martinsville, 75-12 Thursday evening.

The Bobcats had three players hit double figures. Gracie Heckert led the way with 16 field goals that included four three-pointers for 36 points. Lani Morrison added 19 while Madison Wojcik had 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Heckert led in steals with eight while Hallye Morrison had six. Heckert led in assists with six and Morrison added five.

In the junior varsity contest, CHBC played the Effingham freshman/sophomore team and fell 49-34.

Cumberland edged Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville, 40-39 in Thursday evening play.

The Pirates ran off to a 15-9 opening quarter lead and led 25-18 at halftime. OPH came back with a 10-3 third quarter to tie the score at 28-28. Cumberland then had a 12-11 final quarter as Zoe Mitchell went to work scoring nine points on three field goals and three of five at the line. Paige Dittamore added a basket and Katelyn Shoemaker a free throw.

Mitchell finished with 16 points for the Pirates while Sage Carr added 13.

South Central held on for a 48-47 non-conference victory over Webber Township (Bluford) Thursday evening.

The Cougars ripped out to a 15-6 opening quarter and led 30-19 at halftime. Webber Township started a comeback bid with a 12-9 third period to pull within 39-31. In the final quarter, Webber continued their comeback with a 16-9 run only to fall short.

Brooklyn Garrett led South Central with 20 points on seven field goals and six free throws. Laney Webster chipped in with nine points. The Cougars connected on 18 field goals including one three-pointer but had a tough time at the line with 10 of 28.
