Effingham, North Clay, Neoga Nab Saturday Boys Wins

Effingham High School finished out the boys high school basketball season with a 79-59 win over Charleston Saturday.

Charleston edged out with a 25-23 opening quarter lead.

Parker Wolfe tallied 13 of those 23 points for the Hearts on four field goals, two of those three-pointers and three of three at the line. Jacob Stoneburner added seven points and Garrett Wolfe a three-pointer.

Charleston held a 40-38 halftime lead but the Hearts had played even at 15-15 in the second quarter.

EHS then opened the game up with a 23-8 third quarter run as Thompson connected for 10 points on four baskets and two free throws. The Hearts had an 18-11 final period.

P. Wolfe tallied 35 points on 10 field goals, five of those the three-point variety, and was eight of nine at the line. Three other Hearts hit double figures. Stoneburner tallied 15 on six field goals, one a three-pointer, while Nathan Thompson added 11 and G. Wolfe 10.

The Hearts finished the season with a 17-1 record.

In junior varsity action, Charleston claimed a 55-52 overtime wn over the Hearts.

EHS was led by Brayden Pals with 13.

At  Dieterich

North Clay (Louisville) handed Dieterich a 55-45 boys basketball defeat in Saturday high school action.

The Cardinals trailed Dieterich 17-9 after the opening quarter and 26-22 at halftime. The Movin' Maroons went on an opening quarter tear with three trifectas. Bryce Budde connected on two and Cory Gephart one. Jack Westendorf led the way with seven points.

In the second period, North Clay came back with a 17-9 run to pull within 26-22 at halftime. Bryton Griffy scored six while Logan Fleener added five.

North Clay edged ahead in the third quarter, leading 34-32 going into the final period. Brady Ingram connected on five points.

The Cardinals then had a parade to the free throw line in the final period, scoring on 17 of 19. Fleener hit eight of 10, Ingram was six of seven and Boose four of four.

North Clay finished with 29 of 33 from the line. Fleener led in scoring with 19 points on four field goals that included one three-pointer and 10 of 12 at the line. Ingram added 17 on three field goals, one a three-pointer, and 10 of 13 at the line.

Dieterich was led by Pete Britton with 13 points and Budde with 12.

At Toledo

Neoga took the early lead and held on for a 54-48 non-conference victory over Cumberland Saturday.

Paci McClure started off with five points for the Indians in the opening quarter while Adam Fearday nailed two three-pointers for a 13-8 lead. Neoga then had a 16-15 second quarter edge to lead 29-23 at halftime. McClure scored nine points in the period.

McClure then nailed three more baskets, two of the three-point variety in the third period and finished out strong with a three-pointer and five of eight from the free throw line for 30 points in the contest. He connected on nine field goals that included five-three pointers and was seven of 12 at the line.

Also in double figures for Neoga was  Fearday with 13 on five field goals, two from three-point range, and one of two at the line.

Cumberland was led by three players in double digits. Wyatt Napier and Ross Hemmen led the way with 14 points each. Napier hit four field goals and was six of eight at the line while Hemmen connected on seven two-pointers. Brennyn Cutts chipped in with 12 points.

In a Friday contest, Cumberland tallied a 67-32 win over Martinsville.

The Pirates ripped off to a 39-19 halftime lead and the game was over.

Cutts led the way for Cumberland with 21 points on seven field goals that included six three-pointers and was one of three at the line. Hemmen scored 16 while Napier tallied 11.

The Pirates finished with eight three-pointers in the game.

At Macon

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg fell to Macon Meridian, 75-69 to see the season come to a close Saturday.

Meridian held a 34-33 halftime lead and held that one-point lead going into the final quarter, 41-40. Meridian then went on a 24-19 final quarter run.

Samuel Vonderheide led WSS with 21 points on nine field goals that included two three-pointers and one of one at the line. Also in double digits were Austin Wittenberg with 17 and Gavan Wernsing with 16.

The Hatchets finished the season with a 6-12 record.

In junior varsity play, Meridian was a 62-38 winner.

Shelbyville edged Vandalia, 60-59 in Saturday competition.

The Vandals held a 16-14 opening quarter lead but Shelbyville came back to lead 34-28 at halftime. The Vandals pulled within 48-43 after the third period but the Rams held on for the one-point victory despite being outscored 16-12 in the final quarter.

Kade Kull led Shelbyville with 21 points while Braden Nichols added 13 and Max Beyers 10.
