EHS, St. Anthony Nab Wins, Saturday Boys Roundup

FLORA -- Effingham St. Anthony High School claimed a 35-23 victory over Flora in a non-conference boys basketball game Saturday.

The Bulldogs edged out to an 11-7 opening quarter lead as Craig Croy scored five points. The Bulldogs held a 24-15 halftime lead. Ty Wiedman knocked in two three-pointers for the Bulldogs.

St. Anthony had an 11-8 second half in a low-scoring contest for the win.

Croy was the lone Bulldog in double figures with 10.

The Bulldogs nabbed the junior varsity game, 37-17. Griffin Sehy scored 13 and Kyle Stewart 10.

Ini freshman/sophomore action, St. Anthony won 33-26. Collin Westendorf was the lone Bulldog player in double figures with 10.

At Effingham

Effingham came back from their first loss on Friday evening to pick up an Apollo Conference win over Mount Zion, 80-60.

The Hearts went on the offense early, stepping out to a 20-6 opening quarter lead. Parker Wolfe scored eight points in the quarter while Jacob Stoneburner scored five.

EHS held a 34-25 halftime lead then it was Nathan Thompson's turn to go ballistic offensively with a 14 point third quarter. P. Wolfe added nine points.

P. Wolfe finished out with a 10 point final quarter and led the Hearts with 36 points. He connected on 11 field goals including six three-pointers and was eight of 11 at the line. Thompson added 22 points on nine field goals and four of six at the line. Also in double figures was Garrett Wolfe with 12 points.

In junior varsity action, EHS was a 53-42 winner. Ritz tallied 16 and Volpi 13 for the Hearts.

At Newton

Newton edged Neoga, 47-46 in a non-conference matchup Saturday.

The two teams played to a 17-17 opening quarter tie. Neoga moved ahead 26-21 at halftime and held that same five-point lead going into the final period 37-32. The Eagles then came roaring back with a 15-9 run to edge the Indians.

Evan Schafer tallied 19 to lead Newton while Aaron Einhorn chipped in with 13.

Neoga was led by Paci McClure with 23 points.

Teutopolis tallied a 57-44 Apollo Conference win over Taylorville Saturday.

Evan Wermert scored nine points in the opening quarter as the Wooden Shoes took a 16-6 lead. T-town held a 32-21 halftime lead by raining three's down on the Tornadoes. Wermert had two three-pointers while Brendan Niebrugge and Jordan Hardiek had one each.

Taylorville came back with a 10-9 third period and outscored the Shoes 13-10 in the final quarter but couldn't get over the hump.

T-town's Wermert connected on two more baskets and was five of six at the line in the final period. he finished with 27 points on eight field goals that included four trifectas and was seven of eight at the line.

Dieterich fell to Vandalia in Saturday competition, 57-52.

The Movin' Maroons held a 12-9 opening quarter lead and led 23-21 at halftime behind some hot free throw shooting. Dieterich's Jack Westendorf connected on six of six from the free throw line while Pete Britton was five of eight. Derek Kuhl led the way with eight points.

The Vandals came back with 13-3 third quarter to move ahead 39-29 and the two teams played to a 23-23 final period.

Britton finished with 23 points to lead Dieterich on seven field goals that included two three-pointers and was seven of 10 from the free throw line. Kuhl chipped in with 14 points, scoring six in the final quarter.

At Altamont

Altamont downed Warrensburg-Latham before the home crowd Saturday, 61-59 in overtime.

The Indians edged out to a 14-13 opening quarter lead but Warrensburg-Latham came back to lead 24-23 at halftime. Altamont rallied after half with a 17-9 run to move ahead 40-33. Warrensburg-Latham then had a 16-9 final period run to knot the score  49-49 sending the game into overtime.

In the overtime period, Kaden Eirhart and Noah Klimpel knocked in a three-pointer each. Eirhart put in two free throws while Klimpel had one. Jerod Ruffner connected on two free throws and Derick Budde one.

Eirhart finished with 26 points on nine field goals that included four three-pointers and was four of five at the line.

In junior varsity action, Altamont claimed a 61-43 victory. Mason Robinson led the way for the Indians with 14 points.

St. Elmo/Brownstownscored a 58-42 non-conference win over Palestine/Hutsonville Saturday.

The Eagles had four players hit double figures. Jace McWhorter led the way with 14 points while Ean Forbus and Gavyn Smith had 11 each and Caleb Campbell added 10.

SEB held a 30-17 halftime lead. McWhorter led in rebounds with seven, had two steals and two blocked shots. Campbell had four rebounds. Forbus led in assists with five.

Gavan Wernsing led three players in double figures with 19. Austin Wittenberg tallied 13 and Samuel Vonderheide 10.

In the junior vasrity contest, Windsor/Stew-Stras claimed the win, 48-34.

South Central picked up two victories Saturday on its home floor.

The Cougars tallied a 54-30 win over Sandoval. South Central tallied an 8-5 opening quarter lead and led 28-13 at halftime. 

Keenin Willshire scored 16 of the Cougars 20 points in the second quarter and finished with 23 to lead South Central. Also in double figures was Collin Miller with 16.

In the second contest, South Central trounced Patoka, 60-29.

The Cougars held a 31-18 halftime lead and never looked back.

Willshire scored 19 and Miller 17 for the Cougars. South Central hit 25 field goals and was seven of 13 at the line.
