EHS Edges M-S; Area Girls Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Apollo Conference opponent Mahomet-Seymour in girls basketball Thursday evening and picked up a 48-42 victory.

 

The Hearts and Bulldogs played to a 9-9 opening quarter tie. Annie Frost connected for six of those nine points for the Hearts. EHS then went on a run to pull ahead 28-17 at halftime.

Meredith Schaefer connected on two three-pointers, a regular basket and two free throws for 10 of those 19 points. Taylor Armstrong chipped in with four.

The Bulldogs came back with a 17-11 third quarter to pull within five going into the final period. EHS then had a 9-8 final period for the six-point win.

Frost tallied 15 points to lead three players in double figures for the Hearts. Frost hit seven of 12 field goals and was one of five at the line. Schaefer tallied 13 on four field goals that included three trifectas and was two of two at the line. Armstrong chipped in with 10 points on five of 13 from the field.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis High School claimed a 55-43 win over Mattoon as two Apollo Conference teams met Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 12-3 opening quarter lead as Emily Konkel hit a field goal and was four of four at the line and Lexi Niebrugge connected on two baskets.

The Shoes went to 32-21 at halftime. Zoe Cremens went to work scoring nine points on three baskets that included a three-pointer and two of two at the line. L. Niebrugge scored seven points.

The Green Wave came back in the third period with an 11-7 run to pull within seven points going into the final quarter.

But the Shoes regained the momentum with a 16-11 final period. L. Niebrugge tallied 15 points for the Shoes while Grace Tegeler added 10. Cremens finished with nine and Isabella Hardiek and Konkel had eight each in even scoring.

T-town finished with 18 of 26 from the free throw line.

L. Niebrugge pulled down 12 rebounds while Konkel and Kaitln Schumacher had seven each. L. Niebrugge, Tegeler and Hardiek had an assist each.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg tallied a 49-21 victory over Dieterich as two National Trail Conference teams met Thursday.

The Hatchets edged out to an 11-7 opening quarter lead then had a 16-4 second period run to lead 27-11 at halftime.

Hannah Hayes led Windsor/Stew-Stras with 16 points on six field goals and two free throws. She hit two three-pointers. Also in double figures was Mikala Nichols with 13 on four field goals and five free throws.

Dieterich was led by Madilyn Brummer with five points.

South Central tallied a 54-38 National Trail Conference win over St. Elmo/Brownstown Thursday.

The Cougars swept out to a 15-5 opening quarter lead on SEB and held a 31-19 halftime lead.

Halle Smith led South Central with 26 points on nine field goals, one three-pointer and five free throws.

South Central improved to 2-3 in the conference, 4-3 overall and returns to action Monday hosting Wayne City.

At Louisville

North Clay (Louisville) edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 56-50 in Thursday competition.

The Bobcats moved into a 31-23 halftime lead but North Clay came back with a 14-8 third period run to pull within two points going into the final quarter.

Then in the final period, the Cardinals went on a 19-11 run to pull out the victory.

North Clay was led by Miah Ballard and Maddison Lovett with 15 each and Allyson Czyzewski with 13.

CHBC was led by Mackenzie Bunch with 18 and Gracie Heckert with nine. M. Bunch pulled down eight rebounds and Heckert and Lani Morrison seven each. Sydney Lorton had five steals and Heckert four. Lorton had four assists.

The Bobcats dropped to 2-3 in the conference, 4-4 overall.

Neoga fell for the second time this week after going unbeaten through nine games. This time around it was to Vandalia, 61-54.

The Vandals held a 15-14 opening quarter lead then had a big 19-4 run that put the Indians away.

Hill led the Vandals with 18 points while Stewart added 14.

Neoga was led by Kylee Phillips with 13 and Abbi Hatton added 11. Fearday had two three-pointers and finished with nine.

The Indians drop to 9-2 on the season and will play host to Newton Saturday.

Newton ran into a buzzsaw Thursday evening and fell to Flora, 43-21.

The Wolves ripped out to a 21-13 halftime lead then had a 15-2 third quarter.

Amber Russell tallied five for the Eagles. Newton drops to 5-4 on the season.

In junior varsity action, Flora was a 23-16 winner.

At Shelbyville

Both teams had a big scorer but the rest of the team chipped in as Shelbvyille claimed a 64-54 win over Decatur St. Teresa in Thursday play.

The Rams had a 37-21 halftime lead. St. Teresa came back with a 17-8 third quarter run to pull within seven but Shelbyville held on for the victory.

T. Wade led the winners with 32 points while M. Wade chipped in with 17. Five other players scored in the contest.

St. Teresa was led by A. Newton with 36 and J. Taylor with 12. Only two other players scored.
