Taylorville Edges EHS 51-48 In Girls Basketball

Effingham High School played host to Taylorville and the Tornadoes headed home with a 51-48 Apollo Conference girls basketball victory Monday evening. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3.

The Hearts ripped out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead behind two three-pointers by Meredith Schaefer and four points each by Annie Frost and Taylor Armstrong.

EHS held a 26-17 halftime lead as Marrisa Allie scored two baskets for the Hearts.

But the second half was a different story. The Tornadoes pulled within two points going into the final period with a 15-10 third quarter run. Haylee Sagle, who scored seven points in the first half, broke loose and went on a tear with eight points in the third quarter.

Sagle continued her onslaught, connecting on three baskets and was six of six at the line for 12 points in the final period. The Tornadoes had a 19-12 fourth quarter run to pull out the three point victory.

Sagle finished with 27 points on eight of 13 from the field and nine of 10 at the line. Nine of her free throws came in the second half after not shooting any in the opening half. Aubrey Kietzman scored nine points. The Tornadoes hit 44.7 percent from the field and were 68.1 percent from the line with 15 of 22 free throws.

The Hearts were led by Armstrong with 14 points and seven rebounds. Schaefer added 12 points while Frost had nine points and led in rebounds with eight. The Hearts had a 32-24 rebounding edge. EHS shot only 29.5 percent from the field and was 70 percent from the free throw line with seven of 10.

The Hearts dropped to 3-6 on the season while Taylorville improved to 2-7.

EHS returns to action Thursday, playing host to Mahomet-Seymour with a 6 p.m. start.
