Guse, Niemerg Compete at Three-Point Showdown

Altamont High School's Mary Guse and Teutopolis High School's Olivia Niemerg competed in the Three-Point Showdown at the Class 1A and Class 2A State Girls Basketball Tournaments Thursday.

Guse, a senior, took part in the Class 1A competition. Guse hit eight free throws and was tied with two other players, Isabel Shepard of Edwards County (Albion) and Kyndel Arthalony of Mason City Illini Central.

The trio had a shootoff. In the first round, Guse connected on five as did Arthalony. Shepard only connected on two and was out of the competition. Arthalony then hit six in the next round while Guse hit four and was eliminated.

Advancing to the finals were Arthalony, Natalie Engleman of Nokomis who hit 12, Katie Draper of Palestine/Hutsonville who hit 10 and Kaitlyn Mullings of Chicago Morgan Park who connected on nine.

The four will compete in the finals at approximately 12:45 p.m. today.

In Class 2A Niemerg, a senior, finished with five in the opening round and did not advance.

Those advancing were Sarah Carstensen of Elmhurst Timothy Christian with 11, Emma Jay of Joliet Catholic Academy with 10, Katelyn Littleton of Paris with 10 and Austyn Jansen of Breese Central with 10. These four will compete in the finals today at approximately 7 p.m.
