Altamont, St. Anthony To Meet For Regional Title

Altamont and Effingham St. Anthony will meet for the championship of the Class 1A St. Anthony Girls Basketball Regional after both teams claimed victories Wednesday evening.

In the opener, Altamont easily handled Cumberland to the tune of 75-35.

The Indians ripped out to a 21-9 opening quarter lead behind five players scoring. Rachel Jackman led the way with six points while Mary Guse added five.

The lead went to 39-22 at halftime. Jackman continued her hot scoring with eight points while Brooke Runge jumped into the fray, also scoring eight.

Jackman continued on with nine in the third period as Allyson Hardiek scored with eight points.

Five players hit double figures for the multi-talented Indians. Jackman led the way with 25 on 11 field goals and three of five at the line. Guse chipped in with 14 while Runge and Hardiek added 12 each. Ellie McManaway finished out the five with 10 points.

Cumberland was led by Abigail Becker with nine points.

St. Anthony then captured a 56-52 win over Dieterich in the second contest of the evening.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 10-9 opening quarter lead behind the seven points of Riley Guy. The Movin' Maroons came back with an 18-17 second quarter edge to tie the score at 27-27 at halftime. In that run, Andrea Bierman connected on three field goals and was four of four at the line for 10 points.

Dieterich went on a tear in the third quarter with a 17-9 run to lead 44-36 going into the final period. Emily Bloemer led the way with six points while five other players scored a basket each.

But the Bulldogs put forth a huge effort in the final quarter, going on a 20-8 run to pull out the victory.

Reese Jones scored eight points while Izzy  Hakman added five, Guy four and Lucy Fearday three in the run.

Guy finished with 20 points to lead the Bulldogs while Fearday chipped in with 13 and Jones added 10.

Dieterich was led by Bierman with 14 and Boerngen with 10.

St. Anthony and Altamont will meet at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional championship. Listen to the game on KJ Country 102.3.
