Dieterich, C'land, S. Central, N.C. Win Girls Regional Openers

Cumberland and Dieterich were opening round winners in the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Girls Basketball Regional Monday evening.

Cumberland downed Red Hill (Bridgeport) in the first contest of the evening, 51-38.

The Pirates held a 26-12 halftime lead. Red Hill outscored Cumberland 16-15 in the second half.

Stormy Robinson led the way for the Pirates with 23 points while Sage Carr chipped in with 14.

Dieterich then tallied a 71-53 victory over Ramsey.

Ramsey held a 21-18 opening quarter lead but the Movin' Maroons came roaring back with a 22-7 second period to lead 40-28 at halftime.

The Maroons had two players in double figures while nine scored in the contest. Andrea Bierman led the way with 21 points, scoring 15 by halftime. Brooke Locey chipped in with 10.

The regional continues Wednesday with top-seeded Altamont taking on Cumberland at 6 p.m. followed by No. 4 St. Anthony against Dieterich at 7:30.

At Louisville

South Central and North Clay were opening round winners at the Class 1A North Clay Regional Monday evening.

South Central opened with a 56-44 win over Palestine/Hutsonville.

In the second contest, host North Clay downed Oblong, 56-35. The Cardinals ripped out to a 13-2 opening quarter lead and led  27-13 at halftime.

Lovett tallied 21 points for the winners while Lewis added 11.

South Central advances to face Brownstown/St. Elmo at 6 p.m. today while North Clay will face Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 7:30.

Class 2A Newton Regional

Newton saw it's outstanding season come to an end in the opening round play of its own regional Monday evening.

In the opener, No. 8 Newton fell to No. 9 Lawrenceville, 49-35.

Lawrenceville swept out to a 16-5 opening quarter lead and led 24-5 at halftime. The Eagles came back to outplay Lawrenceville in the second half, but it was too little, too late.

Whitney Zumbahlen led the way for the Eagles with seven points.  Brooke Jansen led in rebounds with five and assists with two. Allison Harris had three steals.

Newton finishes the season with a 20-10 record.

In the second contest, Mount Carmel downed Robinson, 72-42.

Tonight's games feature No. 2 Teutopolis against Lawrenceville at 6 p followed by Pana taking on Mount Carmel at 7:30.
