Altamont Wins NTC Girls Tourney, LIC, Lincoln Prairie Meets, EHS Victorious

BEECHER CITY -- Altamont High School claimed the championship of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Indians downed Brownstown/St. Elmo, 53-46.  BSE held a 15-10 opening quarter lead and led by that same margin at halftime, 27-22.

Altamont got untracked with a 12-9 third period to pull within 36-34 then went on a 19-10 final period run to pull out the victory.

Brooke Runge led the way with 18 points, hitting six field goals that included two three-pointers and four free throws. Allyson Hardiek also finished in double figures with 15.

BSE was led by Claire Wilhour with 20 points. Wilhour hit six field goals including one three-pointer and was seven of 11 at the line.

In the third place game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won over Effingham St. Anthony, 67-42. CHBC ripped out to a 21-11 opening quarter lead and led 38-22 at halftime.

Jaelyn Robertson scored 26 points for the winners while Madison Cherry chipped in with 10.

St. Anthony was led by Riley Guy with 14 points.

The consolation championship went to Neoga over North Clay (Louisville), 50-34. The Indians held a 25-23 halftime lead. North Clay had a 17-13 third period to pull ahead 40-38 but Neoga came back with a 12-5 tally for the victory.

Neoga was led by Olivia Titus with 17 points.

North Clay was led by Allyson Czyzewski with 20.

The fifth place contest went to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg over South Central, 46-28.

The Cougars held a 26-9 halftime lead and had an 11-5 third period run.

Mikala Nichols led the winners with 18 points.

South Central was led by Laney Webster with 11.

Named to the National Trail All-Conference Tournament Team were Allyson Hardiek (Altamont) Most Valuable Player, Claire Wilhour (BSE), Jaelyn Robertson (CHBC), Mary Guse (Altamont), Olivia Campbell (BSE), Hannah Hayes (WSS), Riley Guy (St. Anthony), Olivia Titus (Neoga), Allyson Czyzewski (North Clay), Kylee Phillips (Neoga), Carsen Burks (CHBC) and Brooke Runge (Altamont).

At Vandalia

In a Friday contest, Effingham was a 49-43 non-conference winner over Vandalia.

EHS had a big opening half and then had to hold off Vandalia. The Hearts led 30-22 at halftime. Vandalia came back with a 21-19 second half.

Annie Frost tallied 17 points for the Hearts while Hayley Diveley added 10.

At Highland

Teutopolis fell to O'Fallon in the third place contest of the 34th Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday, 68-62 in overtime.

The Wooden Shoes ripped out to a 21-13 opening quarter lead and looked like they had things well in hand with a 36-26 halftime lead. But O'Fallon came back with a 12-9 third period and tied the score with a 21-14 final period 59-59.

In the overtime period, O'Fallon went to work from the free throw line, connecting on nine of 12 while the Shoes could muster only a three-pointer by Hope Bueker.

The Shoes were led by four players in double figures. Lexie Niebrugge led with 22 points while Olivia NIemerg tallied 15 and Ciara Roepke and Bueker scored 11 each. T-town connected on 11 three-pointers led by Niebrugge with five and Roepke with three.

Kaitlyn Schumacher led in steals with two. Niemerg led in rebounds with six. Karsyn Mette, Niemerg and Roepke had three assists each.

In other Saturday games, Highland won the championship of its own tourney with a 53-38 score over Bethalto Civic Memorial. Breese Central captured the consolation championship by trouncing Hillsboro, 34-10. Breese Mater Dei took fifth place by downing Belleville West, 53-39.

At Villa Grove

The Lincoln Prairie Conference Tournament came to a close Saturday.

Winning the championship was Tri-County over Villa Grove/Heritage, 62-49. The third place contest went to Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond over Cerro Gordo/Bement, 49-42. Arcola won the consolation championship by beating Blue Ridge, 39-36.
