T-town Drops Into Third at Highland, Newton To Play For Consy Title at LIC Tourney

HIGHLAND -- Teutopolis High School fell to Bethalto Civic Memorial, 42-34 in the final four of the 34th Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 7-5 opening quarter lead but Bethalto had a 12-8 second period to lead 17-15 at halftime. The Eagles tallied a 13-8 third period behind the scoring of Anna Hall. Hall hit a three-pointer and was three of three at the line in the second quarter run then tallied nine points in the third period.

The Eagles finished out with a 12-11 final period. Hall tallied 22 for the winners while Kourtland Tyus chipped in with 10. Bethalto shot 29 free throws, hitting 14. Hall was seven of 11 at the line.

T-town was led by Olivia Niemerg with 11 points and Ciara Roepke with nine. The Shoes were 13 of 19 from the free throw line.

Lexie Niebrugge led in rebounds with eight but Bethalto's defense held her to only one point. Hope Bueker had two blocked shots. Roepke led in steals with two.

In other games Wednesday, Breese Central defeated Troy Triad, 39-24 and Hillsboro won over Belleville East, 49-42 in consolation bracket action. Central and Hillsboro meet for the consolation championship at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In tonight's games, Belleville West takes on Collinsville at 5 p.m. followed by Nashville meeting Breese Mater Dei at 6:30  The winners advance to the fifth place game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. In the 8 p.m. winner bracket contest tonight, O'Fallon meets Highland at 8.

The winner of that contest will meet Bethalto Civic Memorial at 2:30 p.m. Saturday for the championship while the loser drops into the third place game against Teutopolis at 1 p.m. Saturday.

At Robinson

Newton handed Robinson a 51-25 loss in the Little Illini Conference Basketball Tournament consolation round Wednesday.

The Eagles ran out to an 18-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back in the victory.

Eliza Bierman led the way in scoring for the Eagles with 12 while Brooke Jansen tallied 11 and Allison Harris added 10. The Eagles connected on five three-pointers with Bierman and Harris knocking in two each and Jansen adding one.

Jansen, Harris, Whitney Zumbahlen and Claire Carr pulled down five rebounds each. Harris and Zumbahlen had four assists each. Jansen and Carr led in steals with four each.

In the other game, Red Hill (Bridgeport) won over Casey-Westfield, 48-31.

Newton now faces Red Hill at 5 p.m. today for the consolation championship. Marshall takes on Lawrenceville at 6:30 for third place and Paris meets Olney at 8 for the championship.
