Lady Hearts Come From Way Back to Force Overtime, Lose by Two

The Effingham Lady Hearts came back from 19 down to force overtime, then lost to the Vandalia Lady Vandals, 53-51. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com

Effingham was down 12-7 after one quarter and 24-15 at halftime but were still within striking distance, but after being outscored 14-6 in the third quartrer, Effingham trailed 38-21 with one quarter to go. The Hearts were actually down 38-19, but scored just before the end of the period.

Then came the fourth quarter, when Effingham outscored Vandalia 22-5. Annie Frost was fouled with no time left on the clock at the end of regulation and made one of three foul shots to force the overtime. Effingham took a brief lead in the extra period, but Vandalia regrouped and outscored the Lady Hearts 10-8 to win by two.

Effingham was seven of 34 through the first three quarters, but made eight of 12 shots in the fourth quarter. The Hearts then made 3 of 10 shots in overtime to finish 18 of 56 for the game, 32%, including 1 of 14 threes. Effingham was 6 of 11 from the line, committed just 11 turnovers and grabbed 25 rebounds.

Vandalia hit 40% from the field, 17 of 43, including 5 of 12 threes. The Vandals made 13 of 22 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds and won despite committing 24 turnovers, 11 in the fourth quarter.

Annie Frost led Effingham in scoring with 14 points, while Taylor Armstrong was also in double figures with 12 points. Also for Effingham: Hayley Diveley 7, Ella NIebrugge 5, Grace Bushur 5, Callie Feldhake 4, Katie Carie 2, and Meredith Schaefer 2. Feldhake, who was named Effingham's Player of the Game, led with 7 rebounds.

Bailey Stewart, Vandalia's Player of the Game, led with 16 points while Madyson Hill scored 14 points. Also for Vandalia: Anna Forbes 8, Lanee McNary 5, Laura Miller 4, Gracie Pruett 4, and Alisha Swain 2.

Effingham slipped to 8-12 on the season, while Vandalia is now 7-13. 

Effingham will be back in action Thursday against Centralia, then will travel to Vandalia on Friday.

Effingham won the JV game 64-24. Marissa Allie scored 12 points and Coralin Ohnesorge added 10 points.
