The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes defeated the Effingham Hearts Friday night 66-57 in high school basketball action. The contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com. Watch the game on our YouTube channel later in the weekend.

After a tough first quarter, during which the Shoes turned the ball over seven times and made just three shots from the field, Teutopolis played a much cleaner ballgame and also were money at the foul line, keying the win.

Teutopolis led 12-11 after the first quarter, but trailed 26-24. The second half, though, was all Teutopolis. The Shoes poured in 42 points after intermission, going 17 of 19 from the foul line in the half.

Teutopolis shot 39% from the field, 19 of 49, including 7 of 21 threes. They were 21 of 26 from the line, committed 14 turnovers, just seven over the final three quarters, and grabbed 26 rebounds.

Effingham shot 42% from the field, 23 of 55, including 4 of 20 threes. The Hearts made 1 of 10 threes after intermission. Effingham made seven of nine foul shots, turned the ball over 16 times and pulled down 23 rebounds.

Each team had three players in double figures. For Teutopolis, Mitch Hardiek had a great shooting night, making all four of his shots from the field and seven of eight free throws for his 17 points. Jordan Hardiek scored 13 points including six of six from the line. Evan Wermert scored 11 points. Also for the Shoes: Luke Ungrund 9, Evan Addis 6, Brock Deters 4, Max Niebrugge 4, and Matthew Deters 2. Brock Deters grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Shoes.

For Effingham, Parker Wolfe led the way with 23 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter. Nate Thompson scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Drew Thompson, back from injury, scored 11 points including three of the Hearts' four three-pointers. Jacob Stoneburner scored nine points with seven rebounds.

Teutopolis improved to 10-3 with the win, while Effingham is now 9-5 on the season.

Teutopolis won the JV game 44-33 with Max Niebrugge leading the way with 12 points.

Time was taken at the start of halftime to honor retired School Resource Officer Darren Feldkamp for his almost 20 years' service in the SRO Program. A moment of silence was observed just before the start of the second half to honor the late Craig Lindvahl for his more than 30 years of teaching in the Teutopolis district and then his work on behalf of establishing the Effingham County CEO Program.
