ST. ELMO -- Effingham St. Anthony took the early lead and went on for a 74-39 National Trail Conference victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown in boys basketball competition Friday.

 

The Bulldogs edged out to a 19-13 opening quarter lead and led 43-27 at halftime. St. Anthony finished with three players in double figures. Logan Antrim led the way with 21 points while Jack Hoene tallied 18 and Jaccob Dust 14.

SEB was led by Andy Goldsborough with nine and Gavyn Smith and Jace McWhorter with eight each. Smith and Caleb Campbell had four rebounds each. Smith had five assists.

The Bulldogs also claimed the junior varsity contest, 51-25. Seth Hotze led with 10 points.

At Altamont

Altamont picked up a National Trail Conference victory over South Central Friday, 56-39.

The Indians held a 28-22 halftime lead then had a 15-9 third period. Kaden Eirhart led the way for the winners with 23 points while Aidan Jahraus chipped in with 12. Altamont is now 1-0 in the conference, 5-0 overall.

South Central was led by Willshire with 16 and Brandt with 13. The Cougars fall to 1-1 in the conference, 2-3 overall.

Dieterich ran off to a 22-12 opening quarter lead and went on for an 80-54 win over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in National Trail Conference play Friday.

The Movin' Maroons had three players finish in double figures. Leading the way was Collin Hartke with 19 points while Cole Niebrugge added 18 and Derek Kuhl 17.

CHBC was led by Daniel Lucas with 20 and Jadon Robertson with 15.

At Newton

North Clay (Louisville) had a big weekend. The Cardinals handed Newton a 58-45 loss in regular season action Friday.

The Cardinals edged out to a 17-12 opening quarter lead then had an 11-1 second period. Tyson Jones led the way with 12 points while Lane Holkenbrink and Ethan Bible tallied 11 each.

Newton was led by Jarrett Tharp with 13 and Kyle Schafer with 12

Newton claimed the junior varsity game, 68-42. North Clay won the freshman/sophomore contest, 50-47.

North Clay then headed to the Conrad Allen Tournament at Wayne City and picked up a 49-39 win over Red Hill (Bridgeport).

The Cadinals stepped out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead but Red Hill came back to lead 21-16 at halftime. North Clay regained the lead in the third period with a 17-5 run and went on for the victory.

Jones led with 15 points while Holkenbrink chipped in with 10.

In other Wayne City Tournament games, Cisne edged Grayville, 45-40; Gallatin County won over Webber Township (Bluford), 49-44 and Crab Orchard bounced Wayne City, 83-69.

The tournament contniues tonight as Cisne faces Red Hill at 5:30, Webber Township takes on Crab Orchard at 7 and North Clay meets Grayville at 8:30.

Teutopolis outscored Bloomington Central Catholic for three quarters and claimed a 77-65 victory Friday.

BCC took an 18-8 opening quarter lead but the Wooden Shoes had a 25-12 second quarter to lead 33-30 at halftime then had a 44-35 second half.

Evan Wermert tallied 26 points hitting seven three-pointers and five of six at the line. Brock Deters finished with 14 on six field goals including a three-pointer and a free throw.

Wermert led the way in rebounds with 10 while Mitch Hardiek pulled down nine. Luke Ungrund had five assists.

The Hatchets were led by Gavan Wernsing with 13 and Derek Slifer with 10. Windsor/Stew-Stras dropped to 4-4 on the season.
