Hearts, Bulldogs Win in Girls Action Thursday; Other Results

The Mattoon Lady Green Wave defeated the Effingham Lady Hearts Thursday, 55-34.

A big second half keyed the Mattoon win. Effingham trailed 14-9 after the first quarter and was within 25-20 at halftime, but Mattoon outscored the Lady Hearts 30-14 after intermission to claim the 21-point victory.

Hearts Coach Jeff Schafer said, "We played a pretty good first half. We probably played well enough to have the lead. The second half, Mattoon was awesome defensively. They played great. We had some great stretches of play.

Effingham freshman Annie Frost had a big game with eight points and 14 rebounds. Hayley Diveley led Effingham with nine points and Taylor Armstrong also scored eight points with five rebounds. Also for Effingham: Grace Bushur 3, Ella Niebrugge 3, Sam Urch 2, Kennedy Sowell 2, Katie Carie 1.

Ramage scored 24 points to lead Mattoon, now 7-0 on the season. Effingham is 3-3 for the campaign.

The St. Anthony Lady Bulldogs posted a hard-fought 46-44 win over the Windsor/Stew-Stras Lady Hatchets in National Trail Conference action Thursday night.

St. Anthony grabbed a 10-point lead, 19-9, by the end of the first quarter, but a three-point Lady Bulldog second quarter allowed the Lady Hatchets to pull within 22-18 by halftime. Windsor/Stew-Stras was within 33-32 after three quarters, but St. Anthony outpointed the Lady Hatchets 13-12 in the fourth quarter to win the game by two points.

Riley Guy continued her early season scoring success, pouring in 25 points for St. Anthony. Lucy Fearday was also in double figures with 12 points. Also for St. Anthony: Izzy Hakman 5, Camden Rios 2, and Anna Faber 2.

Hannah Hayes and Makala Nichols each scored 11 points, and Natalie Hayes added 10 points to lead the Hatchets. Also for WSS: Serenity Weeden 7, Mariah Hoene 4, Anna Schlechte 1.

The Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Bobcats downed Martinsville 63-32 Thursday.

It was a one-point game after one quarter, but CHBC outscored the Blue Streaks 53-23 from that point. 

CHBC improved to 7-0 on the season.

Carsen Burks led the Bobcats with 14 points, with Lani Morrison adding 12 and Jaelyn Robertson 11. Also for CHBC: Lauren Wojcik 8, Gracie Heckert 7, Mackenzie Bunch 7, Sydney Lorton 4. Bunch led with 7 rebounds.

The Altamont Lady Indians improved to 7-0 with a 69-25 victory over Casey-Westfield.

Altamont led 22-4 after one quarter.

Five players finished in double figures for the Lady Indians: Allyson Hardiek 19, Rachel Jackman 14, Ellie McManaway 13, Mary Guse 12, Brooke Runge 11.

Paris pounded Newton in conference action 75-27 Thursday.

Scoring for Newton: Zumbahlen 8, R. Russell 7 Bierman 4, White 3, A. Russell 2, Carr 2, McClain 1.

Newton is 4-3 on the season; Thursday's game was its' conference opener.

Paris won the JV game 70-12.

South Central got the win over Webber Township (Bluford) Thursday, 58-39.

Laney Webster stepped up to score 30 points for the Lady Cougars. Also for South Central: Halle Smith 17, Brooklyn Garrett 5, Sierra Arnold 2, Kayli Swift 2, Sydnee Garrett 1, Adrianna Horton 1.

South Central improved to 3-2 on the season.

Brownstown/St. Elmo won Thursday, 69-31, over Dieterich in NTC action.

BSE was up 21-5 after one quarter.

Natalie Oberlink led the way for BSE with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Claire Wilhour scored 17 points with four steals. Olivia Campbell scored 12 points with five assists. Also for the Lady Bombers: Beall 9, Audrey Wilhour 5, Baldridge 4, Stine 4.

For Dieterich: A. Bierman 8, E. Bloemer 4, M. Brummer 4, B. Locey 4, K. Boerngen 4, K. Johnson 3, F. Aherin 2, E. Meinhart 2.

The North Clay Lady Cardinals posted a 67-50 win over the Neoga Lady Indians in NTC action Thursday.

North Clay outscored Neoga 34-20 in the second half to post the win.

For North Clay, Madison Lovett had a monster game, scoring 43 points. Also for North Clay: Chloe Lewis 9, Maleah Holkenbrink 4, Allison Czyzewski 4, Brooke Kincaid 3, Kristin Allen 2, Hailey Miller 2.

For Neoga: Phillips 15, Titus 12, Moore 8, Richards 7, Ramert 4, Fearday 2, Partlow 2.

Neoga is now 5-4 on the season.
