SEB Nabs Tourney Title, WSS Fifth at Cerro Gordo, Mary Sur Shootout

MULBERRY GROVE -- St. Elmo/Brownstown High School claimed the championship of the Mulberry Grove FND Community Bank Turkey Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

 

SEB handed host Mulberry Grove a 49-35 loss in Saturday's championship contest.

SEB stepped out to a 14-7 opening quarter lead and led 27-19 at halftime. The Eagles then had a 17-8 run to put the game away in the third period.

Jace McWhorter led in scoring with 19 points including three trifectas. Andy Goldsborough chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds. Bryton Pruett led in assists with seven and steals with two. Jacob Baron had seven rebounds.

In Friday's game, SEB downed Ramsey, 66-50. Goldsborough connected on four field goals that included two three-pointers and was 10 of 13 at the line for 20 points. McWhorter chipped in with five field goals that included two three-pointers and was seven of eight at the line for 19 points. Both players pulled down nine rebounds. Jaxson Tish added 11 and led in steals with two and blocked shots with three. Pruett added five assists.

In Wednesday's contest, SEB ran off to a 15-1 lead on Father McGivney and that was the game in the opening quarter. The Eagles tallied a 57-22 victory.

J. Tish tallied 15 while Pruett added 12 and Baron 10. Goldsborough pulled down six rebounds. Pruett had six assists. Tish had three steals while Baron had three blocked shots. McWhorter also had three blocked shots.

Cerro Gordo Tournament

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg claimed fifth place at the Cerro Gordo Turkey Tournament Saturday.

WSS edged Blue Ridge, 45-41 in the fifth place contest. The two teams were tied at 13-13 after the opening quarter. Blue Ridge held a 22-18 halftime lead and led 31-24 going into the final quarter. But the Hatchets had an 11-4 final period to tie the score and send the game into overtime where they continued the momentum with a 10-6 run and victory.

Wernsing led the way with 17 points while A. Wittenberg added 16.

In Friday's first contest, Villa Grove captured a 51-36 win over WSS.

WSS had one player in double figures, Wernsing with 10 points.

In the second game for the Hatchets, they claimed a 48-34 win over Sangamon Valley.

Wernsing scored 20 points while A. Wittenberg chipped in with 12.

Mary Sur Shootout

Neoga was a winner in two games as it hosted the Mary Sur Boys Basketball Shootout Saturday.

The Indians opened with a 45-34 win over Arthur Christian. Neoga trailed 24-17 at halftime then had a 15-0 run in the third period and took control of the contest.

Trevor Roy tallied 18 points for the winners.

The second game went to Cisne over Arthur Christian, 50-44.

Neoga then downed Cisne, 59-54 in the final game. Cisne held an 11-9 opening quarter lead but Neoga came back to take a 27-24 halftime lead and led 41-35 going into the final period.

The Indians were led by Roy with 21 points and P. McClure with 16.
