Bulldogs Come from 17 Down to Defeat Shoes, Win Tournament Championship

The St. Anthony Bulldogs came back from 17 points down to defeat the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes in overtime, 56-50, and win the St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.

Earlier Saturday, the Effingham Hearts came from 10 down in the fourth quarter to beat the Mattoon Green Wave 64-58 in the third place game.

Earlier Saturday, Robinson won the seventh place game over Tolono Unity 79-48 and Breese Central defeated Highland 51-44 in the fifth place contest.

ST. ANTHONY 56, TEUTOPOLIS 50 (OT)

The Wooden Shoes exploded out of the gate and led 18-7 after one quarter. The lead was 12 at halftime, 29-17. 

St. Anthony staged a huge comeback in the third quarter, though, outscoring the Shoes 20-6 to take a 37-35 lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter. 

Teutopolis outscored St. Anthony 13-11 and the game was tied as 48-48 heading to the extra period. St. Anthony outpointed Teutopolis 8-2 in the extra frame to post the win.

There were numerous lead changes and ties once St. Anthony had fought back to tie the contest.

St. Anthony made 42% of its shots from the field, 18 of 43 including 2 of 9 threes. The Bulldogs came back to win despite making just 18 of 32 foul shots. They turned the ball over 16 times and pulled down 30 rebounds.

Teutopolis shot 35% from the field, 19 of 55 including 5 of 20 threes. The Shoes made 9 of 19 free throws, committed 22 turnovers, and grabbed 40 rebounds.

Jaccob Dust of St. Anthony, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, had a huge game, scoring 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 7 rebounds. Logan Antrim scored 16 points with 6 rebounds. Also for the Bulldogs: Jack Hoene and Aaron Webb each scored 8 points, Connor Walk 2, and Craig Croy 1.

Teutopolis was led by Jordan Hardiek with 14 points. Evan Wermert scored 13 points and Luke Ungrund 11 points. Also for the Shoes: Matthew Deters 6, Brock Deters 4, and Mitch Hardiek 2.

St. Anthony is now 4-0 on the season, while Teutopolis is 3-1.

EFFINGHAM 64, MATTOON 58

This was a see-saw affair.

Effingham led 12-10 after one quarter and the Hearts were up 31-26 at halftime.

Mattoon battled back, though, outscoring Effingham 18-8 in the third quarter to lead 44-39 heading for the final quarter. 

That's when Effingham went on a 10-0 run to regain the lead and claim the six-point win.

Effingham shot 37% from the field, making 19 of 51 shots including 4 of 20 threes. A key to the Hearts win was their foul shooting. After making just 5 of 11 in the first half, the Hearts made 17 of 19 in the second half and 22 of 30 for the game. Effingham committed 11 turnovers, and pulled down 27 rebounds.

Mattoon made 22 of 50 shots, 44%, including 6 of 17 threes. The Green Wave made 7 of 12 free throws, turned the ball over 15 times and grabbed 28 rebounds.

Nate Thompson led Effingham with 21 points, making 9 of 15 from the field and grabbing 15 rebounds. Drew Thompson added 19 points, making four of nine shots but making eight of nine foul shots. Parker Wolfe struggled through a tough shooting night, scoring 12 points but made five of six foul shots in the fourth quarter. Also for Effingham: Jacob Briggerman 8, Tate Niebrugge 2, and Jacob Stoneburner 2. 

Meade Johnson led Mattoon with 17 points, while Dalton Compton and Samuel Bradbury each scored 13 points.

Effingham finished the week with a 3-1 record, while Mattoon is now 2-2.
