BROWNSTOWN -- Dieterich and Sigel St. Michael moved into the championship game of the National Trail Conference Seventh-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday after picking up victories.

Dieterich opened the evening with a 25-22 win over top-seeded Altamont. Number four Dieterich moved into an 8-4 opening quarter lead and led 15-10 at halftime. Altamont came back with a 12-10 second half run, but it was too little, too late.

Niemerg led the winners with 11 points while Tegler added nine.

Altamont was led by Klein with eight and Reardon with seven.

In the second game, No. 2 Sigel St. Michael handed No. 3 Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor a 27-21 loss.

SSW edged out to a 3-0 opening quarter lead but the Sharpshooters came back with a 10-4 second period run to lead 10-7. Both teams scored eight in the third quarter before St. Michael had a 9-6 final period run.

Ruholl led the winners with 12 points. VonBehrens led Stew-Stras/Windsor with nine points.

Dieterich and Sigel St. Michael meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for the championship. Altamont will face Stew-Stras/Windsor at 10:15 a.m. for third place.

The tournament continues tonight with Neoga against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 6 while North Clay (Louisville) takes on Brownstown/St. Elmo at 7:15. The winners then advance to the consolation championship at 9 a.m. Saturday.

At Charleston

Effingham and Charleston split victories Thursday evening.

In the seventh-grade contest, the Mustangs won 33-16 over Charleston. Effingham led 18-5 at halftime.

Althoff tallied 10 points for the winners while Beals added nine.

In the eighth-grade game, Charleston had a 13-6 second period and went on for a 27-14 victory.

Effingham was led by Izzy Volpi and Olivia Moser with six points each.
