Dieterich, T-town Advance, St. A Falls At Seventh-Grade State Tournaments

Class 7-1A State Tournament

Dieterich advanced to the championship game of the Class 7-1A State Basketball Tournament after claiming two victories Saturday at St. Joseph Middle School.

Dieterich won the opening game over Bartonville Monroe 45-22. The Roadrunners stormed past Bartonville Monroe with a big third quarter surge. Both teams struggled early from the field as Dieterich edged out to a 13-10 opening half lead.

Dieterich then went on a tear, outscoring Bartonville Monroe 24-6 in the third period and opening up a 37-16 lead going into the final period. Tyler Higg was outstanding for the Roadrunners, scoring a whopping 34 points on 16 field goals and two of two at the line. Ryan Radloff chipped in with eight.

Dieterich then advanced to face Chrisman Scottland, a 38-30 winner over Virginia in the opening game of the day.

Again, the Roadrunners had a slow start and the score was knotted at 20-20 at halftime. But the Roadrunners finished out the first half with an explosion, forcing three straight turnovers and turning them into six fastbreak points as time expired to tie the score.

The Roadrunners then continued their momentum to start the second half with an 18-9 third period run. The tempo continued and Dieterich went out with a 14-6 final period surge.

This time around Radloff was the leading scorer with a stunning 31 points on 14 field goals and three of three at the line. Higgs tallied six.

The Roadrunners face Annawan at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state title. Annawan advanced with a 33-24 win over Champaign Next Generation and a 42-12 bouncing of Mulberry Grove. Dieterich sports a 22-2 mark while Annawan stands at 21-2. Chrisman Scottland and Mulberry Grove square off for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Class 7-2A State Tournament

Effingham St. Anthony saw its stay at the Class 7-2 State Tournament at Clinton High School come to a quick close Saturday.

The Bullpups fell to Carthage 43-21. The Blueboys got up quickly on the Bullpups by raining three's. Jacob Bryan had three trifectas in the first half and Conner Artman had two. Cathage kept up a swarming defense and held a 24-12 hafltime lead and a 41-17 lead going into the final period.

Artman led the Blueboys with 18 points while Jacob Bryan chipped in with 12. St. Anthony was led by Alex Deters with seven points and Greg Utz with six.

Carthage advanced to face Decatur Robertson and fell 50-36 in semifinal action. In other opening games, Robertson defeated Lockport Taft 56-34, Normal Metcalf won over Mount Sterling Brown County 54-47 and Fisher won over Grand Ridge 60-52. Normal Metcalf then defeated Fisher 44-26.

Decatur Robertson faces Normal Metcalf Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for the state title while Carthage squares off against Fisher at 6 p.m. for third place.

Class 7-3A State Tournament

Teutopolis improved its record to 23-5 on the season and advanced to the Class 7-3A State Tournament championship game with two victories Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes blasted Athens in the opening game 48-17. T-town jumped out to a 14-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, eventually extending the lead to 30 points heading into the fourth quarter. At that time, the running clock was instituted. T-town's defensive pressure forced Athens into several turnovers early which they were able to convert into easy baskets.

T-town was led by Collin Funneman with 17 points, Eric Kremer and Lee Hardiek with eight each and Ethyn Dust with seven.

In the semifinal game, T-town won over Dixmoor Rosa Parks 47-39. Again T-town jumped out to an early lead, 15-8 after the opening quarter. But the Cougars came back to cut the deficit to just five at 24-19 as the teams headed into the lockerroom for halftime. T-town then had a 15-12 third period edge and would hold on for the win.

Hardiek led the Wooden Shoes with 13 points while Jackson Goeckner contributed nine and Kremer eight.

T-town will now face Burr Ridge at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state title with a 23-5 mark. Burr Ridge defeated Piasa Southwestern 58-45 then won over Tolono Unity 42-25 to advance with a 20-3 record. Dixmoor Rosa Parks and Tolono Unity square off for third place at 6 p.m. Thursday.
