St. Anthony, T-town, Dieterich Head To State

Three area teams will be heading to state tournament competition as Effingham St. Anthony, Teutopolis and Dieterich claimed sectional boys basketball championships in junior high play Wednesday evening.

Players and cheerleaders from the St. Anthony team winning the sectional and advancing to the Class 7-2A State Tournament are, first row, left to right, Meg Deters, Makenzie Koenig, April Dy, Sydney Stevenson, Carrie McGuire, Mariam Khalil, Kendall Fonner and Sadie Bushur. Class 7-2A Effingham St. Anthony Sectional

Effingham St. Anthony captured the championship of its own 7-2A regional.

The Bullpups defeated Altamont 39-15. St. Anthony improves to 14-7 while Altamont ends the season at 14-10. No information was turned in on the game.

The Bullpups advance to the state tournament Saturday at Clinton High School. They will face Carthage (18-0) at 10 a.m. The winner advances to a semifinal game at 5 p.m.

Class 7-1A Stewardson-Strasburg Sectional

Dieterich easily picked up the championship of the 7-1A Stew-Stras Sectional. The Roadrunners blasted Palestine 46-8.

Dieterich led 14-4 after one quarter and 26-8 at halftime. Then in the second half, the squad held Palestine scoreless and had a 20-0 run.

Ryan Radloff was the lone player in the game in double figures with 12. Dalton Bloemer chipped in with nine and Clayton Mellendorf seven.

Palestine finishes the season at 10-10 while Dieterich improves to 20-2 with the win. Dieterich now faces Bartonville Monroe Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Bartonville Monroe comes into the meeting with a 16-7 record. The winner in Saturday's opener advances to semifinals at 5 p.m.

Class 3-A Shelbyville Sectional

Teutopolis had a big scoring first quarter and that set the tone for the game as the Wooden Booties downed Marshall 35-17.

T-town jumped out to a 14-6 opening quarter lead. Marshall played the Booties even in the second period. T-town then had a 14-4 second half run.

Collin Funneman scored nine, Lee Hardiek eight and Landon Jansen eight in even scoring.

T-town advances to the 3A State Tournament at Wenona with a 21-5 mark. T-town faces Athens (15-7) at 10 a.m. Saturday. The winner advances to the semifinals at 5 p.m. Saturday.
