He might not have won the national championship, but Carter Hoene had a good weekend at the National Elks Hoop Shoot Saturday.

The 12-year-old rural Bishop Creek resident made 19 of 25 free throws at the national competition held in Chicago.

Carter, the son of Jamie and Crystal Hoene, won the Illinois regional shoot in Effingham, where he made 21 of 25 shots. He then shot in early February in the Illinois District Shoot in Robinson, where he made 36 of 40 including a three-time shootoff to advance to the state finals.

Carter competed against seven other shooters at the state finals in Decatur in late February and made 24 of 25 free throws to post the best overall score and win the state title.

From there, Carter traveled to Iowa City, Iowa to compete in a regional contest against boys from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin in his age group. He made 27 of 30 shots including a one-time shootoff to reach the national finals.

Carter is a sixth grader at Teutopolis Grade School, and has an older brother, Caden, and a younger sister, Chloe.
