Carter Hoene, the son of Jamie and Crystal Hoene of rural Bishop Creek, has earned a spot in the Elks National Hoop Shoot in Chicago April 27.

The 12-year-old will compete against 11 other shooters in the 12-13 age division. Hoene's path to the Nationals started in December when he won the Illinois Regional Shoot in Effingham by hitting 21 out of 25 free throws.

He then shot in February in the Illinois District Shoot in Robinson where he connected on 36 of 40 including a three-time shootoff to advance to the State Finals. The State Finals took place in Decatur in late February where Hoene competed against seven other shooters and took first by making 24 of 25 to win the State title and the best overall score.

Hoene then traveled to Iowa City to compete in the Elks Regional Shoot. He competed against boys from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin in his age group. He advanced by making a total of 27 out of 30 including a one-time shootoff to earn his spot in the National Finals.

Hoene is a sixth-grader at Teutopolis Grade School. He has an older brother Caden and a younger sister, Chloe.
