Newton Advances to LIC Final; Area Boys Roundup

Newton and Casey-Westfield will square off for the championship of the Little Illini Conference Boys Basketball Tournament after both teams picked up victories Tuesday evening.

Newton edged Robinson 63-60. The Eagles edged out to a 16-15 first quarter lead and led 30-27 at halftime. Robinson came back with a slight 17-16 third period run but Newton maintained control.

The Eagles hit 13 of 29 field goals and nine of 16 from three-point range. They connected on 10 of 17 free throws. Dylan Davidson scored 24 points and had nine assists. Luke Stone had 12 points and Corey Davidson 11.

Casey-Westfield also claimed a three-point win, this one over Flora 51-48. Casey-Westfield had a 17-16 first period lead but the Wolves came back to tie the score at 26-26 at halftime. The Warriors then had a 12-8 third period run and held off a final quarter challenge.

Murphy tallied 12 and Wolfe 11 for the winners. Pearce led Flora with 17 with Leib scoring 12 and Taylor 11.

Newton and Casey-Westfield will square off for the LIC Tourney championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Robinson faces Flora at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for third place.

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis handed Paris a 67-42 loss. The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 15-12 first period lead behind Derek Smith's nine points. The Wooden Shoes pushed ahead 35-20 at halftime with a 20-8 second period run as six players scored.

In the third quarter, T-town had a 23-14 surge. Smith finished with 17 points to lead the Shoes while Jared Waldhoff, Cody Will and Kyle Pruemer scored 10 each.

At Sandoval

North Clay (Louisville) blasted Sandoval in Midland Trail Conference action, 76-29.

The Cardinals held a 25-4 opening quarter lead and led 41-9 at halftime. Nathan Micklautz tallied 13 points and Adam Cox 10 for the winners.
