EHS Girls Pick Up Apollo Win; CHBC Wins, Dieterich Drops Game to Paris

SALEM -- It was a contest between unbeatens in the Apollo Conference Tuesday evening as Effingham traveled to Salem.

The Hearts came out the winner 68-35 to remain on top of the standings with a perfect 7-0 record.

EHS made it evident from the start they were serious as the Hearts zipped out to a 23-3 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

"The girls really came out on fire tonight," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Building an early lead, then continued to play well all night. Everyone contributed in all kinds of ways. We did a great job of handling their pressure and attacking the basket. When they made a run at us in the second half, we answered with a 10-point run of our own

"It was a great effort all night long and that's what it takes to beat a team like Salem."

Josie Zerrusen scored 23 and Caitlin Kaufman tallied 17 to lead the Hearts in scoring. Eight other players scored in the contest. Kaufman and Zerrusen both hit three trifectas in the game.

The Hearts improve to 20-3 overall and will be back in action Thursday with another Apollo Conference game at Mount Zion.

At Paris

Dieterich traveled to Paris for a non-conference contest and fell to the homestanding Tigers 48-37.

The Movin' Maroons stepped out to an 11-7 opening quarter lead but Paris came back with a 17-7 second period run to lead 21-18 at halftime. The two teams played to a 6-6 third quarter tie before Paris put the game away with a 21-13 final period run.

Ashlea Sinclair tallied 12 and Megan Temples 10 for the winners. Dieterich was led by Candace Niemerg with a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down 11 rebounds and garnering five steals. Courtney Flach had 13 points and nine rebounds along with four steals. Sydney Higgs and Mallorie Vahling led in assists with two each.

Dieterich drops to 14-9 on the season and is back in action Thursday hosting South Central with a just a varsity contest starting at 6:15 p.m.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City bounced North Clay (Louisville) 63-26 Tuesday evening with Coach Carolyn Wendte who was sick.

Three players hit double digits for the winners as assistant coach Larry Young guided the Hornets. Micah Jones and Ava Paruleski tallied 18 each while Autumn Riley chipped in with 14. The Hornets held a 29-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

North Clay was led by Kortney Stanfield with eight.
