Lady Hearts Win Waterloo 3A Regional, Pitch Shutout in 4th Quarter

Effingham captured the championship of the Class 3A Waterloo Regional.

The Effingham Lady Hearts captured the championship of the Waterloo 3A Girls Regional Thursday night, defeating Columbia 47-33. The Lady Hearts pitched a fourth quarter shutout in the process.

Effingham and Columbia battled throughout the first three quarters. Columbia led 14-11 after one quarter, Effingham was in front 25-23 at halftime, and Effingham led 36-33 after three quarters.

Then came the fourth quarter, when the Lady Hearts outscored Columbia 11-0 to win the game by 14 points.

Carsyn Fearday led Effingham and all scorers with 16 points. Abby Weis scored 12 points and Natalie Carie was also in double figures with 10 points. Also for Effingham: Skyler Schafer 5, and Madison Buscher and Miranda Fox 2 each.

Effingham advances to the Salem 3A Sectional. The Lady Hearts will play Olney Richland County Tuesday at 6pm. The Hearts had a 20-point lead on Olney after three quarters in the final regular season game last Saturday before Olney outscored Effingham 30-9 in the final period to beat Effingham 58-57.
