EHS Girls Advance To Regional Championship

WATERLOO -- Effingham High School and Cahokia were tied at 17-17 after the opening quarter in the Class 3A Waterloo Girls Basketball Regional Tuesday night.

But the Hearts decided that was as close at Cahokia was going to come the rest of the way with a 20-8 second period and a 37-25 halftime lead. EHS then had a 26-20 second half for the 63-45 victory.

Abby Weis led the way for the Hearts with 23 points. She scored nine in the second period and hit 11 field goals and was one of one at the line. Carsyn Fearday added 19 on seven field goals that included a three-pointer and was four of six at the line.

The Hearts improve to 25-6 on the season and will play for the regional championship Thursday against Columbia at 7 p.m. Columbia downed East St. Louis, 63-54 in the second game Tuesday evening.

The winner of this regional advances to the Salem Sectional and will face the Benton Regional champion, either Benton or Olney.
