EHS Beats Mt. Vernon, Area Boys Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School's Landon Wolfe scored 11 of the Hearts first quarter points and went on to tally 31 in a 66-60 non-conference boys basketball win over Mount Vernon Tuesday evening.

Wolfe scored 11 of the team's 14 first quarter points as the Hearts edged ahead 14-12. Parker Wolfe connected on a three-pointer.

The two teams were deadlocked at 28-28 at halftime as the Rams came back with a 16-14 run. EHS then moved ahead 45-43 in the third quarter. L. Wolfe tallied eight in that period. The Hearts then went on a 21-17 final quarter run to pull out the six point victory.

L. Wolfe connected on 11 field goals that included three trifectas and was nine of 10 at the line for his 31 points. P. Wolfe added 16. The Hearts are now 14-12 on the season.

Mount Vernon won the junior varsity game, 54-40 and claimed a freshman contest, 53-37.

At Mattoon

Teutopolis held a three point lead heading into the final quarter and finished out strong for a 70-61 victory over host Mattoon  Tuesday.

The Wooden Shoes edged ahead 18-17 in the opening quarter and held a five-point lead at halftime.

Dawson Smith and Clint Weber provided the one-two scoring punch for the Shoes with 23 and 21 points respectively.

Evan Wermert was on the brink of double figures with nine points.

The Shoes improve to 24-5 on the season.

North Clay (Louisville) captured a 46-36 non-conference win over host Wayne City Tuesday evening.

Three players hit double figures for the Cardinals. Kaden Turner scored 13 while Aleon Rinehart added 12 and Nick Miller 11.

North Clay improves to 22-8 on the season and will host South Central Friday during Senior Night festivities.

 

At Sandoval

South Central stepped out to a 20-8 opening quarter lead and went on for a 79-46 non-conference victory over Sandoval Tuesday.

Logan Lotz, a 5-foot-8 senior, led the way for the Cougars with 30 points. Hunter Brandt chipped in with 14 and Collin Miller added 11.

South Central improves to 16-12 on the season and will travel to North Clay (Louisville) Friday.

Neoga fell to Tuscola in a non-conference contest Tuesday, 65-56.

The Indians stepped out to a 22-20 opening quarter lead and led Tuscola 34-31 at halftime. But the Warriors came back with a 19-10 third period to move ahead 50-44 and finished strong with a 15-12 final quarter for the victory.

Three players scored in double figures for Neoga. Mitchell Cornell tallied 17 while Reece Johnson chipped in with 13 and Trevor Roy added 11.

St. Elmo/Brownstown took a 31-28 halftime lead and led 49-45 going into the final quarter. That's when Odin went on the offensive, outscoring the Eagles 19-9 and pulling out a 64-58 non-conference victory.

Three players scored in double figures for both teams. Odin was led by Lucas Shaffer with 21, Ethan Finckbone with 13 and Dylan Friend with 13.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Andy Goldsborough and Nate Philpot with 13 each and Bryton Pruett with 10. Jace McWhorter and Jaxson Tish added nine each. SEB dropped to 18-12 on the season.

Villa Grove/Heritage edged Cumberland 66-63 in overtime Tuesday evening.

The Pirates held a 13-11 opening quarter lead and led 32-25 at halftime. Cumberland still held the lead after the third period, 42-36. But Villa Grove/Heritage came back with an 18-12 final period sending the game into overtime. In that OT, Villa Grove/Heritage had a 12-9 run to pull out the win.

Cumberland's Zach Wolke led the way with 39 points. He had a 13 point second period and 10 in the final period. Myles Gerhardt finished with nine.
