MOWEAQUA -- Altamont High School advanced but Effingham St. Anthony saw its season come to a close at the Class 1A Moweaqua Central A&M Girls Basketball Sectional Monday evening.

Altamont will be playing for the sectional championship after picking up a 65-55 victory over the host squad Central A&M in the second game of the evening.

The Indians fell behind 16-14 in the opening quarter but came roaring back with a 25-14 second period to lead 39-30 at halftime.

Central A&M fought back with a 15-12 third period but Altamont regained control with a 14-10 final period for the victory.

The Indians didn't shoot particularly well with 35 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range. But Altamont hit 60 percent from the line.

The Indians knocked down seven three-pointers as Mary Guse connected on three and Brooke Runge two.

Guse finished with 15 points while JoAnna Schultz and Allyson Hardiek chipped in with 11 each. Runge tallied nine.

The Indians improve to 29-3 on the season and will face Tri-County for the sectional championship Thursday.

Tri-County ended St. Anthony's season with a 68-45 win.

Tri-County ripped out to a 17-6 opening quarter lead and led 37-17 at halftime.

Altamont had difficulties with Tayler Barry, a 5-foot-6 sophomore, who scored only four points in the opening quarter but tallied nine in the second period and finished with 20 to lead Tri-County.

Also in double figures were Harley Barry, a 5-foot-6 senior, with 15 and Kiersten Price-Wilson with 12.

St. Anthony was led by Sydney Gibson and Meg Richards with 12 each. Riley Guy finished with nine.

"We just dug too big of a hole against their press and didn't crash the glass well in the first half," said St. Anthony Coach Bart Wiedman. "I was happy with how we came out and played in the second half.

"Congrats to the five seniors, Abby Repking, Shea Kinkelaar, Clare McHugh, Meg Richards and Sydney Gibson on great careers."

Wiedman coached his final St. Anthony contest as he will be giving up the reins of the program to watch his own children play ball. The Bulldogs ended the season with a 22-11 mark.

Altamont will now face Tri-County at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional championship. The winner advances to the Salem Super-Sectional Monday, February 18 at 6 p.m. against the winner of the Steeleville Sectional, either Goreville, who defeated New Athens Monday 63-21 or Junction Gallatin County or Marissa Co-op who play tonight.

At Tuscola

Coach Laurie Thompson's Wooden Shoes will be playing for the Class 2A Tuscola Girls Basketball Sectional championship after easily disposing of Pana, 61-36 in action Monday evening.

The two squads met early in December with Teutopolis prevailing by a 60-23 count and it wasn't much different this time around.

T-town edged out to an 18-11 opening quarter lead as Lexie Niebrugge took charge with two three-pointers and Olivia Niemerg and Morgan Mette connected for five points each.

Jillian Hamilton and Shania Schoonover were the Panthers lone scorers through the first half. Schoonover put in 10 points while Hamilton scored six. But the Shoes' defense began to take care of Schoonover who only put in two more baskets, those in the final period. Hamilton got loose in the third quarter with seven points but T-town had a 21-11 third period run.

T-town led 32-16 at halftime. Niebrugge was on fire with eight more points for 14 by halftime. The 5-foot-8 sophomore finished with 23 points and four rebounds. She connected on four of six from three-point range.

The Shoes continued their tough defense and had a 21-11 third period run. Niebrugge tacked on seven more points while Claire Bushur chipped in with five and Sadie Bueker four.

In the final period, Coach Thompson cleared the bench playing all 15 players in the game.

Although Niebrugge was the lone player in double figures, seven other players scored in the contest. Bushur finished with nine, Niemerg eight and Morgan Mette seven. Mette and Sadie Bueker led in rebounds with five each. Niemerg had three steals. Niebrugge had two assists.

T-town moved to 30-4 on the season while Pana finished with a 22-10 mark. The Panthers were led by Schoonover with 14 points and Hamilton with 13.

In the opening contest, Sullivan took care of Edwards County (Albion), 65-43.

T-town will now face Sullivan at 7 p.m. Thursday for the sectional championship. The winner advances to the Salem Super-Sectional against the winner of the Red Bud Sectional, either Nashville or Belleville Althoff. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
