St. Anthony, Altamont, T-town Claim Girls Regional Crowns

Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of the Class 1A Palestine Regional.

PALESTINE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School Coach Bart Wiedman was very happy with his team's defense Thursday evening. The Bulldogs held Oblong to five points in the final period to claim a 56-37 victory and the championship of the Class 1A Palestine Regional.

The Bulldogs edged out to a 9-7 opening quarter lead and led 24-19 at halftime. St. Anthony led by only three going into the final period. That's when the Bulldogs defense caught fire and the offense went into action.

St. Anthony went on a 21-5 tear to pull out the 19-point victory. Clare McHugh and Meg Richards tallied six each in that quarter and Shea Kinkelaar jumped in with five.

"Our defense was tremendous in the fourth quarter," said Wiedman. "They couldn't get a glimpse of a look and then when they shot, we rebounded."

Three players scored in double figures for the Bulldogs. Kinkelaar finished with 18 points on seven field goals that included four three-pointers. McHugh and Richards scored 14 each. Riley Guy had five rebounds and three assists while Sydney Gibson finished with three steals.

"Shae played at another level offensively tonight," said Wiedman. "And Meg and Clare were solid as always."

The Bulldogs are now 22-10 on the season. They now advance to the Moweaqua Central A&M Sectional where they will take on Tri-County at 6 p.m. Altamont will meet Central A&M at 7:30.

Dieterich's Jennifer Robards advanced in the Country Financial Three-Point Shootout.

Altamont captured the championship of the class A South Central Regional.

Class 1A South Central Regional

Altamont High School took charge early and went on to beat Brownstown/St. Elmo, 65-52 to win the championship of the Class 1A South Central Regional Thursday.

The Indians ran out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead. BSE came back with a 16-15 second period and then had a 16-12 run to trail only 45-40 going into the final period.

That's when the Indians then got back on track offensively with a 20-12 final period to pull out the 13 point victory.

Three players scored in double figures for the Indians. Mary Guse led the way with 18 points while Leah Mayhaus added 16 and Rachel Jackman 11. The Indians finished with eight three-pointers. Guse nailed four while Jackman and Brooke Runge had two each.

Mayhaus led in rebounds with 10. Runge had six assists. Tinley Mette led in steals with three. Allyson Hardiek had two blocked shots.

BSE was also led by three players in double figures. Olivia Campbell scored 19 while Claire Wilhour finished with 18 and Natalie Oberlink with 12.

Altamont heads to the Moweaqua Central A&M Sectional Monday to face the host squad at 7:30 p.m.

Halle Smith of South Central and Carsen Burks and Tabitha Endsley of Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City advanced in the Country Financial Three-Point Shootout.

Teutopolis claimed the championship of the Class 2A Robinson Regional.

Class 2A Robinson Regional

Teutopolis took the early lead and never let go in a 61-30 pounding of Marshall to claim the championship of the Class 2A Robinson Regional Thursday.

The Wooden Shoes ran off to a 20-9 opening quarter lead as Lexie Niebrugge knocked in two three-pointers and two free throws for eight points while Sadie Bueker hit two regular baskets and two three-pointers for 10 points.

The Shoes held a 29-14 halftime lead then came out in the third quarter with an 18-6 run. Olivia Niemerg and S. Bueker hit trifectas while Morgan Mette was three of four at the line and Savannah Grimes added two free throws. Claire Bushur put in six points.

S. Bueker finished with 16 to lead the offense while Niebrugge scored 14. Bushur and Grimes led in rebounds with four each. Niebrugge led in steals with four. The Shoes had 13 steals in the game. Grimes led in assists with two. Bushur and Niemerg had a blocked shot each.

The Wooden Shoes are now on their way to the Class 2A Tuscola Sectional where they will face Pana at 7:30 p.m. Monday. In the opening contest, Sullivan meets Edwards County (Albion) at 6.

T-town's Hannah Pruemer advanced in the Country Financial Three-Point Shootout.

Class 1A Bethany Okaw Valley Regional

 Moweaqua Central A&M edged ahead of Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in the Bethany Okaw Valley Regional Thursday, 14-12.

CAM then moved ahead 30-19 at hafltime and had a 27-10 third period run and finished with a 74-39 victory.

Megan Schlechte and Nikki Trussell finished in double figures for the Hatchets. Schlechte tallied 17 while Trussell added 16.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had its best season and finished with a 22-6 record.

Central A&M, picking up its sixth regional title in the last seven years, moved to 20-9 and will advance to face Altamont at the Central A&M Sectional Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Advancing in the Country Financial Three-Point competition was WSS' Nikki Trussell who hit eight.
