Stew-Stras, T-town Headed To Eighth-Grade State Tourneys

STRASBURG -- Stewardson-Strasburg captured the championship of its own Class 8-1A Boys Basketball Sectional Wednesday evening.

Stew-Stras handed Sigel St. Michael a 43-20 loss. Stew-Stras held a 23-4 halftime lead.

J. Wittenberg tallied 16 for the winners while Nothaus added nine.

St. Michael was led by Tedrick with eight points. The Sharpshooters end the season with an 8-18 record.

Stew-Stras advances to the Class 8-1A State Tournament at Macon Meridian High School with a 24-1 record. Stew-Stras will face Ottawa Marquette (18-3)  at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Other members of the tourney field include Washington St. Patrick (2-2), Springfield Little Flower (22-5), Ransom (20-2), Peoria Hollis (19-1), Ashland A-C Central (25-1) and Rantoul St. Malachy (25-1).

Class 8-3A Cumberland Sectional

Teutopolis claimed the Class 8-3A Cumberland Sectional championship with a 57-23 win over host Cumberland Wednesday.

The Wooden Shoes swept out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and led 34-9 at halftime.

Caleb Siemer scored 16 points to lead the winners while Brendan Niebrugge, Logan Roepke and James Niebrugge scored nine each.

Cumberland was led by Hendrix with nine.

T-town advances to the Class 3A State Tournament at Tolono Unity Junior High School Saturday with a 23-3 record and will take on Kankakee Bishop McNamara at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Other members of the field include Washington Central (21-3), Williamsville (25-1), Vandalia (22-2), Glenwood Brookwood (13-6), Dunlap Valley MS (21-3) and St. Joseph (21-2).

Class 8-4A  Effingham Sectional

Unfortuately for the Mustangs of Effingham, they fell in their own sectional championship Wednesday.

Springfield Grant, who captured the 4A State Tournament championship last year, tallied a 41-12 win over Effingham. Grant took a 7-2 opening quarter lead and held Effingham scoreless in the second and third quarters.

John Westendorf led the Mustangs with four points. Tanner Pontious pulled down eight rebounds.

Effingham ends the season with a 19-5 record. Springfield Grant improved to 25-1 and head to the state tournament Saturday.

Class 8-2A St. Anthony Regional

Effingham St. Anthony fell to Casey-Westfield in its own Class 8-2A Regional Wednesday.

Casey-Westfield picked up a 58-45 win over St. Anthony. Casey-Westfield advances to the Class 8-2A State Tournament with a 23-2 mark.
