Third Time is Not the Charm for Lady Hearts vs Charleston

The first two battles between the Effingham Lady Hearts and the Charleston Lady Trojans this season had been fought at Charleston, in a conference game and at the Charleston Holiday Tournament. Both games had gone to Charleston, once by seven points, the other by two.

This time, the game was at Effingham and the Lady Hearts were at full strength. However, the game turned out to have the same result, with a Charleston win.

The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Hearts 56-46 in a contest heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com. Charleston is now unbeaten in 25 games this season.

Effingham and Charleston were tied 37-37 heading to the final quarter, but Charleston outscored Effingham 19-9 in the quarter to post the victory.

Effingham led 12-9 after the first quarter, but Charleston rallied to hold a 25-23 halftime lead.

Effingham made just 36% of its shots, 18 of 50, but hit just 9 of 29 in the second half after 9 of 21 before intermission. They were 5 of 18 on threes. The Lady Hearts also struggled at the line, making just 5 of 10. The Lady Hearts turned the ball over 11 times, but just three times in the second half, and grabbed 26 rebounds.

Charleston hit 46% of its shots, 17 of 37, including 5 of 15 threes. The Lady Trojans made 14 of 18 foul shots, turned the ball over only eight times, and once in the second half, and had 15 rebounds.

Skyler Schafer led Effingham in scoring with 16 points, 11 in the second half. Carsyn Fearday scored 14 points and completed a double-double with 10 rebounds. Also for Effingham: Natalie Carie 7, Abby Weis 5, and Miranda Fox and Madison Buscher 2 each.

Charleston sophomore Shae Littleford led all scorers with 29 points, including 11 of 11 at the foul line. Elizabeth Buscher was also in double figures with 12 points. Also for Charleston: Regan Bollant 7, Annie Crowder 5, Hannah Buescher 2, and Bernie Jackson 1. 

Effingham is now 23-5 this season, with three of the losses against Charleston. 

The Lady Hearts have their Senior Night this Thursday, playing host to Lincoln. A reminder that since Lincoln is the opponent, the JV game will start at 5:30pm. 

Speaking of the JV game, Effingham won that contest in convincing fashion Monday, 59-20. All 14 players on Aaron Witges' squad scored in the contest; seven each for Taylor Armstrong, Callie Feldhake and Hayley Diveley; six for Carsyn Crowell; five for Sawyer Althoff; four each for Grace Bushur, Meredith Schaefer, Nicole Schneiderjon and Kennedy Sowell; and two each for Peyton Budde, Katie Carie, Shelly Rieman, Emma Hardiek, and Coralin Ohnesorge.
