T-town, Dieterich, BSE, Cumberland Claim Girls Wins

MATTOON -- Eleven players scored as Teutopolis High School pounded Mattoon, 52-37 in girls basketball action Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Mattoon 15-11 after the opening quarter but came back to tie the score at 20-20 at halftime. The Shoes then had a big second half, outscoring the Green Wave 32-17 for the victory.

Lexie Niebrugge tallied 12 points while Morgan Mette added 11 as the two players in double figures for the Shoes. Mette led the team in rebounds with eight. Nine other players contributed points. Emma Deters led in assists with three. Olivia Niemerg led in blocked shots with two. Claire Bushur had five rebounds. Mette and Niemerg had two steals each.

The Green Wave were led by Ramage with 15 points.

T-town, ranked ninth in the latest Class 2A state poll, has a 25-4 record and will be back in action hosting Effingham tonight.

Dieterich edged out to a 19-16 opening quarter lead and went on for a 72-65 National Trail Conference win over South Central Thursday.

The score was tied at 34-34 at halftime before the Maroons had a 22-13 third period.

Jenny Robards scored 22 for the winners while Andrea Bierman added 20 and Emily Bloemer chipped in with 13. Robards nailed four three-pointers.

South Central was led by Laney Webster with 21 and Kayli Swift with 12. Weber had four trifectas in the contest.

Brownstown/St. Elmo didn't waste any time, jumping out to a 34-10 opening quarter lead and that set the tone for the rest of the contest as BSE captured an 83-40 victory over Ramsey Thursday.

BSE's Olivia Campbell, a 5-foot-8 sophomore, scored 16 points in that opening quarter and finished with 30 for the contest. She connected on 13 field goals that included three trifectas and was one of two at the line. Campbell added four assists and three steals.

Also leading BSE were Claire Wilhour with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals, Natalie Oberlink with 12 points and 13 rebounds and Elizabeth Johnson with 10 points.

Cumberland edged Martinsville, 36-33 in action Thursday.

The Pirates trailed Martinsville 9-4 after the opening quarter but had a 28-18 run over the next two periods.

Two players scored in double figures for the Pirates. Josie Brown led the way with 14 points while Zoe Mitchell chipped in with 10. Mitchell led in rebounds with eight and had one assist and one steal. Danae Sowers had three assists, seven rebounds and a steal. Liberty Dunaway added two steals, three rebounds and two assists.

At Martinsville

At Olney

Olney played host to Newton and edged the Eagles, 48-44 in action Thursday.

The Tigers took a 13-8 opening quarter lead and led 24-18 at halftime. Newton came back in the second half with a 26-24 run but couldn't get over the hump.

The Eagles were led by Brooke Jansen with 14 and Whitney Zumbahlen with nine. Jansen had seven rebounds, Claire Carr six and Zumbahlen five. Allison Harris led in assists with two.

Newton drops to 7-18 on the season.

Olney also claimed the junior varsity contest, 50-37. Newton drops to 6-8.
