St. Anthony, North Clay Advance At NTC Tourney

ALTAMONT -- Top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony and fourth-seeded North Clay (Louisville) advance to a meeting with each other after picking up victories Tuesday evening at the 84th Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament.

St. Anthony opened the evening with a 66-40 victory over St. Elmo/Brownstown. The Bulldogs edged out to a one-point opening quarter lead but went ahead 26-13 at halftime with an 18-6 second period run. Jaccob Dust knocked in three baskets and three free throws for nine points in the run.

The Bulldogs pushed that to 42-27 going into the final quarter.

Dust finished with 23 points on nine field goals and five of six at the line and pulled down seven rebounds. Also in double figures was Kaden Fearday with 11.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Andy Goldsborough with 15. Goldsborough connected on three trifectas and was six of 15 from the field. He also pulled down eight rebounds while Nate Philpot had six.

In the second contest, North Clay edged out to a 16-14 opening quarter lead and led 26-18 at halftime. The two teams then played even in the second half with a 14-14 third period and a 13-13 final quarter.

Three players hit double figures for the Cardinals. Nick Miller led the way with 16 points while Aleon Rinehart added 12 and Blake Noll 11. Noll connected on three trifectas. Luke Fleener led in rebounds with six.

The Hatchets were led by Jackson Miller with 12 points and Gavin Wernsing with 11. Beau Bennett led in rebounds with five.

St. Anthony and North Clay will meet in winner bracket action Thursday at 7:45 p.m.

Tonight's games feature Altamont taking on South Central at 6:15 p.m. followed by Dieterich against Neoga at 7:45. Both are opening round games.
