Newton Falls In LIC Boys Tourney, LOVC Scores

FLORA -- Newton High School opened the Little Illini Conference Boys Basketball Tournament with a loss at the hands of Olney Monday evening.

The Eagles trailed Olney 14-5 after the opening quarter but came back with a 9-6 second period to trail 20-14 at halftime. However, the Tigers went on a run in the third period for a 43-23 lead going into the final quarter.

Newton was led by Justin Zumbahlen with seven points.

In the second contest, Marshall downed Lawrenceville, 59-42.

In games tonight, Lawrenceville faces Paris at 5 p.m. followed by Casey-Westfield meeting Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 6:30 and Olney taking on Marshall at 7:30.

LOVC Tournament

The Little Okaw Valley Conference Tournament opened play Monday evening with two games at Cumberland High School.

Hutsonville/Palestine downed Oblong, 54-40. Tri-County then defeated Martinsville, 69-35.

Hutsonville/Palestine advances to face Villa Grove-Heritage at 6 p.m. today followed by Cumberland taking on Tri-County at 7:30.
