ALTAMONT -- St. Elmo/Brownstown High School opened the 84th Annual National Trail Conference Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Monday evening.

The two teams squared off with SEB putting together a 62-44 win.

It was opening quarter jitters at the NTC Meet as neither team scored until 4:55 when SEB's Andy Goldsborough hit a basket. Then it was CHBC's turn when Nick Miller hit a free throw and from there the two teams finally got untracked. SEB's Goldsborough began finding the range, knocking in two three-pointers and finished with eight points in the quarter. Bryton Pruett chipped in with a three-pointer and a free throw.

CHBC finished with 50% in the opening quarter as Trace Smith connected on two baskets and Miller his free throw and a three-pointer.

SEB ran off to an 11-3 lead but CHBC came back in the second period and pulled within 30-25 at halftime. Smith hit two more three-pointers and a basket for eight in the quarter while Dylan Webster put in a trifecta and two free throws for five.

SEB's Goldsborough continued his scoring with two free throws and two baskets for six while Jaxson Tish scored six on an old-fashioned three-point play and a from-behind-the-arc three.

Goldsborough, a 6-foot-1 junior, tallied 14 points and pulled down eight rebounds in the opening half.

In the second half, it was Nate Philpot who went on a hot streak for the Eagles. He missed his opening shot then connected for three trifectas, a regular basket and two free throws for 13 points. Although SEB slowed down, hitting only six of 21 shots in the quarter, they held a 49-36 lead going into the final period.

From there, Tish nailed two three-pointers and the lead was in the safety margin for the victory.

Goldsborough finished with a double-double, scoring 20 points and pulling down 15 rebounds. Philpot tallied 15 points while Tish scored 12.

CHBC was led by Webster and Smith with 14 points each. Nick Miller and Eddie Clearwater led in rebounds with seven each.

The Bobcats drop into game six Thursday against the loser of the Altamont vs. South Central contest which is scheduled for Wednesday.

SEB advances and will now face top-seeded Effingham St. Anthony tonight at 6:15. The second game features No. 4 North Clay (Louisville) against No. 5 Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
