LOUISVILLE -- Stewardson-Strasburg and Altamont moved into the championship game of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament with victories Wednesday evening.

 

Stew-Stras picked up a 42-36 win over South Central. Stew-Stras edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead and led 17-15 at halftime. South Central pulled within 31-30 going into the final quarter.

But Stew-Stras' A.Wittenberg caught fire with two baskets, that included a three-pointer, and two of two at the line for seven points as the Stars had an 11-6 run for the victory.

A. Wittenberg finished with 20 points while Davis chipped in with 11. Stew-Stras is 20-1 on the season.

South Central was led by Dobson with 16 and Watwood with 10.

Altamont then edged North Clay (Louisville) 47-45.

Altamont took an 8-6 opening quarter lead and led 25-19 at halftime and 40-29 going into the final quarter. North Clay rallied with a 16-7 final period only to fall two points short.

Altamont was led by Hammer with 18 points. North Clay was led by Fleener with 20 and Bosse with 12.

In consolation bracket action, Dieterich defeated Sigel St. Michael 33-27.

The two teams were at 2-2 after the opening quarter before the Sharpshooters took a 12-7 halftime lead. Altamont came back within 21-18 edge going into the final period then had a 15-6 run led by Kidd with nine points.

Kidd finished with 15 for the winners. St. Michael was led by Niebrugge and Koester with seven each.

 St. Elmo/Brownstown defeated Neoga 52-25.

SEB leaped out to a 19-3 opening quarter lead and led 29-11 at halftime.

Campbell scored 23 points, 15 coming in the opening quarter and all of his points by halftime.

Neoga was led by Reynolds with 15.

The tournament comes to a close tonight with Dieterich facing St. Elmo/Brownstown at 5:30 for the consolation championship, South Central against North Clay at 6:15 for third place and Stew-Stras facing Altamont at 7:30 for the championship.

At Effingham

Effingham split victories with Greenville in A and B seventh-grade competition Wednesday.

Greenville was a winner in the A contest 26-15. Greenville held a 14-8 halftime lead and had a 10-5 final period.

Raddatz led Effingham with five points.

In the B contest, Effingham ran off an 11-2 opening quarter and went on for a 35-11 victory.

Reed, Ellis and Larimore scored eight points each for the Mustangs.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony defeated Mattoon in eighth-grade action Wednesday, 29-24.

The two teams played to a 5-5 opening quarter tie. The Bullpups then had a 12-5 second period to lead 17-10 at halftime and pushed that to 26-13 going into the final period.

M. Sager led St. Anthony with 13 points.

In seventh-grade play, St. Anthony won 45-23. The Bullpups held a 24-9 halftime lead.

Beau Adams scored 16 while Colin Westendorf added 10 for the winners.
