EHS Wins, Highland, LIC Tourney Scores

The Hearts moved to 2-0 in their own Effingham High School Girls Round Robin Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.

EHS handed Pana a 56-30 loss. The Hearts stepped out to a 14-6 opening quarter lead and led 24-14 at halftime and 40-21 going into the final quarter.

Carsyn  Fearday tallied 18 points, hitting eight field goals and two of three at the line. Also in double figures was Abby Weis with 13 points, connecting on three trifectas and two regular baskets. EHS improves to 16-3.

In the opening game of the evening, Bloomington downed Centralia, 39-32.

EHS is now 2-0 followed by Bloomington 1-1, Centralia 1-1, Pana 0-1 and Vandalia 0-1. The tourney continues tonight with Vandalia facing Pana at 6 and Effingham against Centralia at 7:30. There are four games scheduled Saturday.

At Highland

Teutopolis fell to O'Fallon in action at the 23rd Annual Scott Credit Union Highland Tournament Wednesday, 56-47.

The two teams played to a 7-7 opening quarter tie before O'Fallon moved ahead 26-23 at halftime. O'Fallon kept the pressure on and had a 15-13 third period and a 15-11 final quarter.

Three Wooden Shoes finished in double figures. Lexie Niebrugge tallied 12 points while Olivia Niemerg and Sadie Bueker added 10 each.

Morgan Mette led in steals with three. S. Bueker pulled down nine rebounds while Claire Bushur had eight. S. Bueker and Bushur had two assists each. Niemerg had a blocked shot.

In other games Wednesday evening, Belleville Althoff defeated Salem 53-45, Taylorville won over Okawville 56-49 and Bethalto Civic Memorial trounced Nashville 46-18.

Tonight's contests are Carlyle against Hillsboro at 4, Highland meeting Belleville West at 5:30, Belleville East facing Breese Mater Dei at 7 and Breese Central against Triad at 8:30.

T-town returns to action Friday against Nashville at 4 p.m. The winner advances to the fifth place contest Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

At Newton

Newton advanced to the consolation championship of the Little Illini Conference Tournament with a 49-40 win over Red Hill (Bridgeport).

The Eagles whipped out to a 12-2 opening quarter lead and led 20-11 at halftime and 34-23 going into the final quarter.

Three players hit double figures for the Eagles. Brooke Jansen, a junior, tallied 20 points, hitting eight field goals and four of eight at the line. Eliza Bierman tallied 13 while Allison Harris added 10. Claire Carr and Renae Russell had four rebounds each. Harris led in assists with seven. Jansen and Harris had three steals each.

Newton improves to 7-14 on the season and will face Lawrenceville at 5 p.m. today for the consolation championship. Lawrenceville beat Robinson 54-27 Wednesday.

In other contests tonight, Flora meets Marshall at 6:30 for third place while Paris takes on Olney at 8 for the championship.
