GREENVILLE -- Effingham and Effingham St. Anthony both came up winners in the James Burke Memorial Boys Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

Effingham opened with a 53-31 victory over Hillsboro. The Mustangs jumped out to a 17-8 opening quarter lead and led 33-16 at halftime.

Wolfe tallied 14 points and had four steals while Estrada had 12 points and Pontious 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Mustangs are now 16-3 on the season.

In the second game, Triad downed Salem 29-17. The third contest went to Aviston over Roxana 36-14.

In the final game of the evening, St. Anthony edged Greenville 28-26.

The Bullpups took a 4-3 opening quarter lead but trailed Greenville 14-12 at halftime and 18-15 going into the final period. That's when St. Anthony put it together with a 13-8 run.

In that run, J. Willenborg scored seven points while M. Sager added four. Willenborg finished with 12 points while G. Sehy added 10 for the winners.

In tonight's games, Hillsboro meets Salem at 6 and Roxana takes on Greenville at 8 in consolation bracket action. Thursday, in winner bracket play, Effingham faces Triad at 6 followed by St. Anthony taking on Aviston at 7. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 7 while the losers will square off for third place at 6. The consolation championship is scheduled for 5.

NTC Tournament

LOUISVILLE -- Four games were contested in the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Monday.

Stewardson-Strasburg opened with a 45-4 win over Sigel St. Michael. Stew-Stras held a 30-2 halftime lead.

Leading the winners were A. Wittenberg with 15 and Nothaus with 11. St. Michael was led by Lee and Croy with a basket each.

In the second game, South Central edged Dieterich, 48-45.

The two teams were tied at 18-18 at halftime. South Central moved ahead 33-28 going into the final quarter then had to hold off Dieterich for the win.

Atwood scored 25 and Dodson 13 for the winners. Dieterich was led by Britton with 30 and Kidd with 12.

North Clay then took a 41-17 win over Neoga. Leading 27-9 at halftime, North Clay had a 14-2 third quarter.

Bosse led the winners with 19 points. Neoga was led by Hennessay with six.

Altamont took a close 34-30 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

Altamont led 17-12 at halftime and 30-20 going into the final period.

Eirhart led the winners with 12 points. SEB was led by Poe with eight.

The tournament continues Wednesday with Sigel St. Michael facing Dieterich at 4 p.m. followed by Neoga taking on SEB at 5:30 in consolation bracket action. In winner bracket play, Stew-Stras meets South Central at 6:30 and North Clay takes on Altamont at 7:45.

At Newton

Teutopolis handed Jasper County two losses in regular season action Monday.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade game, 74-19. T-town ripped out to a 28-8 first quarter lead and that was the game.

Eli Hanson and Kolten Tabbert led the Shoes with 11 points each. Wolfe led Jasper County with 11.

In eighth-grade play, T-town won 66-19 with a 26-0 opening quarter lead.

Brendan Niebrugge scored 14 for the winners while Caleb Siemer added 11. Shamhart led Jasper County with five.
