But for one two-point deficit, the St. Anthony Bulldogs led start-to-finish in defeating the Stewardson-Strasburg Comets 60-45 in boys high school basketball action Friday night.  St. Anthony handed the Comets their first conference loss in the contest, which was the Pinkout Game at the Enlow Center for this season.  The effort raised funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, with fans for both the Bulldogs and the Comets decked out in pink.

The contest was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

After that two-point Comet lead, the Bulldogs quickly took control of the game, leading 13-6 after one quarter, 26-13 at halftime, and 42-26 after three quarters.  St. Anthony pushed the lead to as much as 21 points before the Comets scored a flurry of points toward the end.

The Bulldogs made 22 of 42 shots from the field, better than 50%, and made 15 of 26 from the foul line.  St. Anthony grabbed 30 rebounds and made the only three-pointer they tried.  A glaring error for the Bulldogs was 23 turnovers, but they often responded by taking the ball right back.

Stew-Stras made just 15 of 49 shots for 30%, hit on 14 of 21 foul shots, and grabbed 23 rebounds.  The Comets made just one of 13 three-point shots and committed 22 turnovers.

Jacob Schuette scored 19 points on eight-of-13 shooting to pace St. Anthony.  Despite a sore back, John Goeckner scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Neil Williams was also in double figures with 10 points for St. Anthony, and Jason Vogel scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds.  Also for St. Anthony: Andrew Gardewine five, Alex Hoelscher four, Charlie Schultz two and Zach Gardewine one.

Jason Becker led Stew-Stras with 13 points on five-of-eight shooting and completed a double-double with 11 rebounds.  Justin Fulk scored 12 points and Brandon Helmuth added 10 points.  Also for the Comets: Jason Fry seven, Dylan Roley two and Ben Helton one.

St. Anthony improved to 4-13 on the season, with three of those wins in the National Trail Conference.  Stew-Stras is now 10-7, suffering their first conference loss after six wins.

St. Anthony won the JV game 60-27.  Matt Gibson led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Mark Jones paced Stew-Stras with 13 points.

St. Anthony also won a freshman game that started the evening, 35-19.  For St. Anthony, Nick Grunloh scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, Jay Niebrugge had eight points and five rebounds, and Kyle Hartke had five assists.
