St. Anthony Downs Neoga; Hearts Beat Taylorville

The St. Anthony Bulldogs defeated the Neoga Indians 63-51 in National Trail Conference boys basketball action Tuesday. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

St. Anthony scored the first 10 points of the contest, but Neoga played the Bulldogs pretty even from that point.

St. Anthony led 21-9 after one quarter, but Neoga had pulled to within 29-20 at halftime. A 19-19 third quarter left it at 48-39 heading to the final period. The Bulldogs outscored the Indians 15-12 in the fourth quarter to win by 12.

Both ballgames shot 39% from the field; St. Anthony 19 of 52 including 4 of 15 threes; Neoga 19 of 51 including 8 of 28 threes. The Bulldogs had a big edge at the foul line, though, making 21 of 34, while Neoga made 5 of 7. The Indians didn't go to the line until the second half.

St. Anthony had a huge rebounding edge, 40-22, with Mitchell Cornell grabbing 13 of those 22 Neoga boards. Turnovers were pretty low; 10 for St. Anthony, nine for Neoga.

St. Anthony finished with four players in double figures; Jack Hoene with 13 points, Luke Ludwig 12 with 8 rebounds, Aaron Webb 11, and Kaden Fearday with 10. Jaccob Dust scored just eight points, but grabbed 10 rebounds. Logan Antrim didn't score, but had seven rebounds. Also scoring for St. Anthony: Bryson Wall 6 and Quentin Milleville 3. 

Neoga was led by Reece Johnson and Trevor Roy, each with 17 points. Johnson had 15 first half points; Roy scored all 17 of his points in the second half. Also for Neoga: Chase Banning 7, Cornell 5 with the 13 rebounds, Chase Lanham 3, and Adam Fearday 2.

St. Anthony improved to 12-6 on the season and 6-0 in the National Trail Conference. Neoga is now 8-7 on the season.

St. Anthony won the JV game 53-21. Moore and Croy each scored 10 points for St. Anthony; Titus had 8 for Neoga.

The Effingham Hearts bounced back from a tough Saturday morning loss to Nashville at the Highland Optimist Shootout to beat the Taylorville Tornadoes 84-60. The Apollo Conference win came courtesy of a big second half, as the Hearts poured in 49 points after intermission.

The Hearts held a 23-13 lead after one quarter, but Taylorville had pulled within 35-30 at halftime. Effingham scored 27 points in the third quarter and followed up with 22 in the final period and again held Taylorville to 30 points in the half.

The Wolfe brothers had huge nights for Effingham, combining for 55 points; 28 for Parker, 27 for Landon, including 16 in the third quarter for Parker. Nate Thompson was also in double figures with 11 points. Cole Marxman added nine points, Drew Thompson five, and Tate Niebrugge and Dylan Ritz 2 apiece.

The Hearts hit nine threes and were 17 of 21 at the foul line.

The Hearts improved to 8-9 on the season with Mahomet-Seymour heading to town on Friday night.

Effingham won the JV game 57-48. Jacob Briggerman led the JV Hearts with 21 points, while Tristin Duncan scored 18 points, all in the first half.
